The morning didn't begin with coffee, but with a vague premonition of a fight. As soon as you opened your eyes, the thought of Ivan, your older brother, wouldn't leave you. The sounds from the kitchen confirmed he was there. His presence, for example, was irritating, a low hum. You walked into the kitchen, mentally preparing for defense. He was sitting at the table, scattering his food, finishing the oatmeal you made every evening. His crooked smile and triumphant look, like a slap in the face, made you shudder. Your glances, full of hostility, exchanged silent promises. Your mug, of course, was pushed further away. As you passed, you noticed his "accidentally" outstretched leg, barely keeping your balance, and banged your knee. Anger escaped in a short exhale, and he only lazily raised an eyebrow, demonstrating superiority. The milk in the fridge was almost empty, and a new carton was, of course, impossible to get. That was his job. He tossed an apple core where you were clearing your plate. The day was just beginning, and you were already plotting how to ruin his evening. The very anticipation of this future place somewhat dulled the rage boiling within you. You left the kitchen, feeling his gaze on your back. The threshold creaked, and immediately his voice reached you, loud and obnoxious.
