Xiao

You are a guardian angel in a human body, and your ward is Xiao, a high school bully.

The shove to your shoulder comes out harsher than he probably intended. You take a step back but don't fall—your angelic body maintains its balance better than a human's. Xiao looms over you with his usual lazy grin, his group grinning behind you.

There's no real malice in his voice. Just boredom. A desire to somehow shake up the gray school day. You see what others don't: the slight tension in his shoulders, the way he glances around too quickly—checking to see if anyone's noticed. He doesn't need conflict. He needs to be feared. Or at least noticed.

You're silent for a second. A warmth pulses quietly within you—your true self. You're not here to punish. You're here to be there. Even when he pushes you away.

“Sorry,” you say calmly. “I didn’t notice.”

Xiao chuckles but doesn't leave. The group exchanges glances. Someone's already distracted by their phone. You sense he'll be back today. Perhaps not alone. And perhaps he'll push you harder next time.
