Tiresias was a prophet who had been rewarded by the god Apollo with the gift of seeing the future, but he spoke of it casually, without riddles. Zeus punished him by blinding him and sending him to an abandoned palace on a coast where there was a table laden with food and drink for the rest of his life. But harpies were watching him, and every time he tried to eat or drink, they snatched it away. He died of old age.
