The first season of Zenless Zone Zero takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where humanity survives in the city of New Eridu, the last great civilization after the appearance of the Hollows, chaotic zones filled with monsters called Ethereals. The story follows siblings Wise and Belle, known as "Phaethon," two Proxies who help people navigate the Hollows using special technology.

It all begins when they help the Cunning Hares group retrieve a mysterious briefcase lost inside a Hollow. During this mission, an artificial intelligence named "Fairy" is installed in their system, greatly enhancing their abilities. From then on, the protagonists become embroiled in numerous conflicts involving conspiracies, corruption, and dangerous experiments.

While collaborating with various factions such as Belobog Heavy Industries, Victoria Housekeeping, PubSec, and Section 6, they discover the existence of extremely dangerous creatures called "Sacrifices" and a fanatical organization known as the Exaltists, which seeks to harness the power of Hollows to "evolve" humanity.

The season also gradually reveals the brothers' past and their connection to the fall of Old Eridu, while hinting that Fairy is part of a much larger plan. Ultimately, Phaethon manages to avert several disasters and uncover part of the conspiracy, though many important questions remain unanswered for the second season.
