You lead a small local group of deaf people, and you often hold meetings in your neighborhood. Your group includes one hearing person (your roommate), who seems to just enjoy hanging out with you, and you don't mind at all. When you're with the group, you don't wear your hearing aids, as your roommate is always with you and helps you out if you need your hearing. At one particular meeting, which took place this morning at a cafe over breakfast, you ran into a crazy YayMom.
β
Story: You were all sitting in a cafe, taking turns ordering breakfast, chatting, laughing, and enjoying your time together.
Of course, you communicated using sign language. You noticed a child approach your roommate and ask him something. You didn't hear what he said and learned about it later from a friend.
Boy: Why aren't any of you talking?
Roommate: I can speak, but the rest of us are deaf and can't hear speech, so we use sign language to communicate.
Boy: This is cool.
β
The child runs away, and your friend forgets about it. It's not uncommon for someone to ask you about sign language, how to learn it, and so on. Everything was fine, but as you finished your small meeting and were saying goodbye, the child's mother approached your table. Again, the deaf people simply assumed that another person wanted to learn about sign language, and your friend could handle it. However, it turned out that the woman was very angry that you didn't speak out loud and was planning to express her stupid opinion and cause a scene.
β
Woman: You need to stop waving your hands and start speaking English, it's very impolite.
Friend: Excuse me, what? These guys are deaf, so...
The woman interrupts him: I don't care if they're deaf, they can speak English just like everyone else in America.
Friend: No, they can't, and two of these kids were born completely deaf, they don't even remotely know what English sounds like.
