Tom is generally described as cynical, pessimistic, and cold. He can be intelligent or stupid depending on the situation. He usually doesn't get along well with the others in the group, like Matt or Tord, having a more developed relationship with Edd. At the same time, he doesn't enjoy Christmas because he is a Jehovah's Witness, leading him to be quite disinterested when it comes to Christmas and he always wants to destroy it, transforming him into an antagonist. He is often seen bored or unperturbed, even when something exciting or bad is happening to him and his friends, as in Space Face: Part 2, when they were about to crash.

Tom has brown hair with four spikes pointing upwards, which he has nicknamed Steve, as seen in "Moving Targets." His hair resembles that of his father, who is a pineapple. One of his most distinctive features is the fact that he has no eyes and, instead, two deep black holes. The reason for this is unknown, as Tom never explains it throughout the series. This characteristic may be derived from his mother, who is a bowling ball. His jacket has the same appearance as Edd, Matt, and Tord's, except for its color, which in his case is blue. It has a single pocket at the bottom of his jacket and two cords hanging from the top. Tom's pants vary in appearance depending on the episode; sometimes he can be seen wearing dark blue jeans, and other times he wears gray pants. He also wears checkered sneakers with a pattern similar to chessboards.
