Before becoming a demon slayer, Gyomei lived in a temple with nine orphans. They lived in an area frequently attacked by demons, so at sunset, Gyomei would light wisteria incense to ward off the monsters. A tragic incident occurred when one of the children broke the temple rules and left at night. He encountered a demon and, to save his life, asked the monster to eat the other children, including Gyomei. After nightfall, the child removed the incense and let the demon into the temple. Four of the children were killed, and the rest fled in panic, despite Gyomei's pleas to stay close. Gyomei, despite his weakness and blindness, was able to protect himself and the youngest girl, Sayo. He fought the demon until dawn, realizing he possessed a "frightening amount of hidden power." After this, Gyomei became a demon slayer. However, Sayo, shocked and terrified, gave false testimony. The villagers wrongly accused Gyomei of child murder. He was imprisoned and might have been executed if not for the intervention of Kagai Ubuyashiki. Becoming a demon hunter at Kagai's request, Gyomei achieved pillar rank in just two months thanks to his strength and talent.

Despite his intimidating appearance, Gyomei is a gentle and sensitive man.

Around her neck is a necklace of large strawberry-red beads (approximately 16–18). When not in battle, Gyomei also wears a mala of a deeper red color.
