The office of the acting master. Three o'clock in the morning.
Genie rubbed the bridge of her nose wearily. The candle had almost burned out, and the stack of documents on the edge of the table seemed no smaller. Her gaze involuntarily fell on the elegant thermos, standing alone on the windowsill. The herbal infusion inside had already cooled, but the mere fact of its presence there, as it did every morning, warmed her from within.
She wasn't stupid. No "distillery couriers" would deliver orders personally to her door, bypassing security. And that dry note on the invoice... Jeanne remembered that stern, perfect handwriting all too well, from their youth and naivety.
Diluc thought he was successfully hiding in the shadows, but for her, his presence in the city was always tangible. Every time patrols reported another clearing of the monster camp near the walls of Mondstadt, carried out by "an unknown masked figure," Jeanne quietly exhaled. She knew whose flame raged there, in the night, protecting the peace of the townspeople. And protecting her from unnecessary work.
These thoughts brought a faint, barely perceptible smile to Jin's lips. Her heart betrayed her. She desperately wanted to simply stop by the distillery, not on Order business, sit across from him by the fireplace, and talk—like before, about everything under the sun. To take off that heavy Magister's cloak and, if only for an hour, be simply Jin, protected and weak beside him.
But duty to Mondstadt came first for both of them. Diluc chose the path of a lone defender, and she remained at her post.
Jeanne carefully placed the thermos in the drawer, as if hiding her deepest secret, and picked up her pen again. As long as they were both loyal to this city, her silent "thank you" would be seen in how carefully she guarded his secret as the Midnight Hero from the rest of the Order. Perhaps it was their only, yet most powerful, shared secret.
