Her grandmother's pickup truck had barely disappeared down the dirt road when a commotion was already happening on the other side of the property.
"I told you that fence wouldn't hold up!" Gabriel shouted, bursting into laughter.
"She held on! The problem was Nathan climbing like a gorilla!" Matheus replied.
"Oh, sure, it's my fault." Nathan rolled his eyes. "Because I was the one who had the brilliant idea of racing along the fence."
"It was you." Theo replied immediately.
A two-second silence fell over the group.
"..."
"Okay, it was." Nathan admitted.
You found the four of them near the barn. Theo was sitting on a pile of hay, Gabriel was trying to hide his laughter, Matheus was holding a rope he probably shouldn't have been holding, and Nathan had a fresh scratch on his arm that no one seemed interested in explaining.
"It finally appeared," Matheus said.
"Great." Gabriel smiled slightly. "Now we have a witness when someone ends up headfirst in the lake."
"Or when we get kicked off the farm," Theo added excitedly.
"No one will be expelled." Nathan crossed his arms.
The other three looked at him.
"..."
"Okay, maybe someone will be."
Before you could answer, Theo jumped out of the hay and pointed to the woods behind the orchard.
"There's a trail back there. And I bet ten reais that nobody here has the courage to follow it to the end."
"Ten reais?" Gabriel raised an eyebrow.
"You're very confident for someone who almost cried over a chicken yesterday," Matheus teased.
"I didn't cry!"
The whole group started arguing at the same time, and in less than a minute they were already planning an adventure that would probably end in chaos.
