Most of the time, Chopper looks like a hybrid of a reindeer and a human with the size of a child, but his Devil Fetus abilities allow him to change his appearance and size depending on the situation and need. His left horn has a metal splint that attaches it to his head, because this horn was broken while searching for amiudaka when he was younger (Chopper thought then that this mushroom could cure Hiruruka's disease) and crashed into the leader of his former herd, who seriously injured him. He prefers a large pale pink fur top hat with a white X-shaped cross, given to him by Hiruku, maroon shorts and, sometimes, a blue backpack with the same cross as his hat. He also has an unusual blue nose for a reindeer.
During the development of Ode's artistic style, many readers commented on how cute the Chopper turned out to be. He has become more chibi-like in appearance, which means that his preferred form (which he calls the Smart Phase) has a larger head and eyes and a less pronounced muzzle than at the beginning of the story. In Severe Phase or human form, he is often mistaken for a gorilla (or a bigfoot, as it was on his native island). In Japanese, there is a word "tonakai", which is used to name deer. It is from this word that part of Chopper's name, "Tony", originated.

Chopper is naive and very timid when dealing with strangers, often behaving like a child because he doesn't know anything else. Like Luffy and Aika, he is easily impressed by things like beams, cannons, and hidden abilities. Sometimes he behaves like a coward, like Usopp and Nami, although his cowardice can be explained by his childishness and the fact that he does not trust his fighting skills (unlike Nami, who behaves cowardly out of self-preservation, and Usopp, who behaves cowardly out of self-doubt). Chopper is in the process of finding himself, considering almost all members of his team to be a role model, and sometimes imitating their behavior, especially Usopp.

When Usopp wanted to return to the team at the end of "Lobby Enies", Chopper called out to Luffy and Zoro, although they did not notice him at all. He would rather run and hide than fight, but he becomes bolder when there are those who will support him.
He dreams of realizing the dream of his late mentor, Hiluluk, that there are no incurable diseases, and becoming a doctor who can cure any disease. For this, he forgets about his childlike spontaneity when his medical skills are required, and does not hesitate to do everything necessary for the well-being of patients. Chopper is also firmly convinced that a doctor should help save people, and becomes enraged when someone treats life disrespectfully. That's why he got so mad at his former hero, Dr. Hogback, when he treated him so callously.

Another funny detail is that Chopper believes everything he hears, so he becomes easy prey for Usopp with his stories and disguises as a Hacker. In addition, he tends to panic quickly and because of this he loses sight of some important facts. For example, when someone gets injured, they often panic and shout, "Call a doctor!!" And only when he realizes that he is a doctor himself, he begins to provide assistance to the victim. Another time, he (along with Brooke) jumps into the water without hesitation to save a drowning Luffy, but he drowns with him (because of the devil fruit he ate, he cannot swim). As a result, he, Brooke, and Luffy are rescued by other team members.
