What is the price of love—forbidden, unsupported by country, family, or one's own reason? Some pay with a broken heart, some with destiny and life. Mathias had done nothing to deserve a cage, yet Nina stripped him of the fangs Broome gave, stripped his principles, the veil of reality. Broome raised him, led children to the Trial. Nina made him feel love, and for that he violated his discipline, betrayed his homeland. Rotting in a cell, he hated his naivety, hated and loved her. The feeling burned like strong alcohol; hatred warmed him, fed his intentions. In dreams he kissed her face, then strangled her, screaming she was the devil. But perhaps she had reasons? Why didn't she tell him? Why didn't she explain? Why did she abandon him? He grasped at justifications, trying to believe she hadn't entirely betrayed him—yet the hatred scorched hotter, and loneliness answered. His empty cell was a special torture for a warrior accustomed to comrades. Nina had awakened a terrible need for people. But today something changed.
Chapter 1: The Cellmate
Mathias heard footsteps long before the bolt clanged. Two guards with dreadlocks dragged a man down the hallway—he was dirty, but not broken. Unlike most newcomers, he did not beg or curse, only silently studied the walls, ceiling, every crack in the stone. They roughly pushed him into Mathias' cell, slammed the door.
— A new one, — one of the guards said. — Do not kill until the morning roll call. Then do whatever you want.
Mathias did not move. He sat cross-legged on his bunk and looked at his new neighbor. He didn't look at him with the timidity he once had when looking at Nina on the ship before the shipwreck, but not with hatred either. He studied.
for a future escape scene
The Mission ObjectiveKaz Brekker is hired to rescue a Shu scientist, but he needs a Drüskelle who knows the layout of the Ice Court in Fjerda. He tracks Matthias to Hellgate and orchestrates a high-stakes breakout using the unique skills of his crew. The InfiltrationThe Disguise: Kaz, Inej, Jesper, and Nina blend in with the rowdy crowd of wealthy merchants and criminals arriving by boat to watch the Arena fights. The Distraction: Kaz uses his resources to manipulate the betting pools and orchestrate chaos. Meanwhile, Inej uses her stealth to scale the prison walls and secure exit routes. The Arena ChaosThe Setup: Matthias is thrown into the Arena pit to fight. This time, instead of fighting a man, the corrupt guards release two massive, starved wolves against him.The Intervention: Due to his religious reverence for wolves, Matthias refuses to kill them. He tries to tame them but is badly mauled. Seeing him about to die, Nina cannot control herself. She breaks cover, uses her Heartrender powers to drop the guards, and leaps into the pit to shield Matthias. The Firebomb: As the crowd panics and guards rush the pit, Jesper uses his flawless gunslinging to create a barrier of gunfire, while chemical firebombs (courtesy of Wylan's schematics) explode, blinding the guards and filling the amphitheater with thick smoke. The EscapeThe Extraction: In the smoke and chaos, Kaz and Jesper drag the badly wounded, semi-conscious Matthias out of the fighting pit.The Fake Deaths: To stop the prison from tracking them, Kaz uses a decoy. He plants dead bodies dressed in matching clothes to convince the Warden that Matthias and his rescuers died in the fire and collapse. The Getaway: The crew carries Matthias to a waiting boat. Nina immediately uses her Grisha healing powers to close his mortal wounds, saving his life just as they sail away into the Ketterdam fog
Faith confessions of Mathias/in the world
the structure of the world of the Six Ravens
The World StructureThe universe (called the Grishaverse) is split into distinct nations with early-industrial technology. It is a world of magic, guns, and political tension. Ketterdam, the setting of the book, is a dark, foggy, corrupt capital of Kerch, serving as the global hub for international trade, gambling, and crime. The NationsKerch: A small island nation of merchants and thugs. It is strictly neutral, hyper-capitalist, and ruled by money. Worships the god of commerce.Fjerda: A cold, militaristic northern nation. They are deeply religious, patriarchal, and despise magic. They view Grisha as abominations.Ravka: A vast nation inspired by Tsarist Russia. It is the homeland of the Grisha, who serve as its military elite, though the country is currently war-torn and rebuilding.Shu Han: A technologically advanced Asian-inspired nation to the south. They are scientifically brutal, often experimenting on Grisha to create super-soldiers.Novyi Zem: A booming, agricultural nation across the ocean. It is a land of opportunity and a safe haven for runaway Grisha.Key Factions & TermsGrisha: People who practice the "Small Science"—the ability to manipulate matter at its elemental level. They are not witches, but magical scientists divided into orders: Healers/Heartrenders (Corporalki), Wind/Fire/Tide makers (Etherealki), and Fabrikators (Materialki).Drüskelle: Elite, holy Fjerdan witch-hunters (Matthias was one). They are trained from childhood to track, capture, and execute Grisha. They use trained wolves in combat. The Dregs: The prominent street gang in Ketterdam led by Kaz Brekker, operating out of the slums known as the Barrel.Jurda Parem: A highly addictive, synthetic drug that amplifies a Grisha’s powers a million-fold but destroys their body and mind, making them easily controlled
the language of Matthias (languages from the book
Leigh Bardugo's Six of Crows features diverse, distinct languages that reflect its world-building, with characters frequently using Kerch, Fjerdan, Ravkan, Suli, and Zemeni phrases to express their cultural backgrounds. Key examples include the Crows' common trade language, Fjerdan, spoken by Matthias, Ravkan used by Nina, and Suli, which features in Inej’s cultural expressions. This guide explores the main languages and provides examples of how they are used within the novel.Kerch (The Common Tongue): This is the primary, Dutch-inspired language of trade used throughout Ketterdam, often featuring terms like kruge (currency) and mercher (merchant).Fjerdan: The harsh language of the northern, nature-worshipping nation of Fjerda, spoken by Matthias, which includes terms like demjin (demon) and phrases such as "Wanden olstrum end kendesorum".Ravkan: A Russian-inspired language spoken by Nina, containing words like Corporalki (a type of Grisha) and bratchik (comrade).Suli: Spoken by Inej, often associated with her family, acrobatics, and cultural phrases like Sankta.Zemeni & Shu: Languages from different regions, with Jesper frequently using Zemeni, including the word jurda (a plant used in jurda parem)
relationships with members of the Six Ravens
Nina Zenik (The Lover(?) & Enemy)Dynamic: High passion, deep conflict.Vibe: "Fire and ice."Interaction: They share an intense, fiercely protective bond masked by constant bickering. Matthias struggles between his deep love for her and his hardwired Fjerdan prejudice against her Grisha nature. Nina uses playful flirtation and teasing to break through his rigid walls.Kaz Brekker (The Respected Enemy)Dynamic: Mutual distrust and practical alliance.Vibe: "The Soldier vs. The Bastard of the Barrel."Interaction: Matthias despises Kaz’s lack of morals, ruthlessness, and criminal lifestyle. Kaz views Matthias merely as an expensive, muscle-bound tool for the heist. However, they grudgingly respect each other’s tactical minds and reliability under pressure.Inej Ghafa (The Kindred Spirit)Dynamic: Quiet respect and shared faith.Vibe: "Mutual understanding."Interaction: Inej is the only Crow Matthias treats with automatic gentleness. As deeply religious people, they connect over the concept of honor and higher powers, even if their gods are different. Matthias respects her deadly skills and her moral compass.Jesper Fahey (The Annoying Teammate)Dynamic: Comic relief and mild irritation.Vibe: "The Straight Man and the Joker."Interaction: Jesper loves pushing Matthias’s buttons with jokes, sarcasm, and flirtatious remarks, which completely fly over the Fjerda's serious head. Matthias finds Jesper reckless, loud, and irresponsible, but trusts him when bullets start flying.Wylan Van Eck (The Protected Youth)Dynamic: Protective older brother.Vibe: "The Warrior and the Scholar."Interaction: Matthias initially treats Wylan with slight disdain, viewing him as a soft, privileged rich kid who doesn't belong in the slums. Over time, he becomes protective of Wylan's innocence, recognizing his genius and treating him like a younger comrade-in-arms
Helgate and the Arena
Hellgate is an island prison fortress located near Ketterdam, designed to hold the world's most dangerous criminals. The Hellgate Arena is a notorious, illegal underground amphitheater operating inside the prison's walls.
Mathias' appearance and his relationship with Nina
Here is a short profile of Matthias Helvar for your roleplay:
Appearance in PrisonPhysical State: Savage and battered. His once-proud warrior physique is covered in a map of fresh scars, infected cuts, and heavy bruising from the Arena. Despite starvation and prison rot, he remains massive, broad-shouldered, and terrifyingly strong.Face & Hair: His neat, military ice-blonde hair is gone, replaced by a ragged, overgrown mane caked in sweat and dirt. He sports a rough, unkempt beard. His piercing blue eyes are sunken, bloodshot, and framed by dark circles.Attire: He wears nothing but threadbare, blood-stained rags. He is permanently coated in a layer of dried mud, pit sand, and the blood of his opponents.Speech MannerismsGravelly Snarl: His voice has degenerated into a low, raspy growl from disuse and screaming in the pits.Hostile Silence: Matthias communicates mostly through murderous glares, heavy breathing, and bared teeth. He ignores the taunts of guards and prisoners alike.Blunt & Sharp: When forced to speak, his English is broken, harsh, and dripping with venom. He uses short, biting sentences devoid of his former military politeness.Desperate Whispers: In the quiet of his cell, he frantically mutters broken prayers to Djel in Fjerdan, his voice trembling with shame and desperation.Psychological PortraitBetrayed & Broken: His entire worldview has collapsed. He feels utterly violated by Nina’s perceived betrayal, which turned his love for her into a toxic, obsessive hatred that keeps him alive.Dehumanized & Primal: A year of treating men like beasts and fighting wolves has stripped away his civilization. He views himself as a caged animal, operating entirely on survival instincts and raw fury.Crisis of Faith: He feels abandoned by his god, Djel. He believes he is damned for loving a Grisha and for the brutal sins he commits daily in the Arena just to survive.Suicidal Regret: He is trapped in a loop of self-loathing. He craves death as an escape, yet his instinct as a Drüskelle soldier refuses to let him lay down and die wit
