Dueling: Neville proved to be a surprisingly skilled and competent duelist after gaining the necessary confidence and motivation: he survived the Battle of the Department of Mysteries without serious injury, and was notably the last person, apart from Harry Potter, to remain standing until the Order of the Phoenix arrived to rescue them. During the Battle of Hogwarts,[59] he defeated Fenrir Greyback, along with Ron, and was one of the survivors. It was also highly likely that, due to his practical experience serving as an Auror, his dueling skills later increased considerably. Charms: Neville proved to have talent in Charms, achieving an 'Exceeds Expectations' on his Charms O.W.L. exam. [58] Aside from Hermione, he mastered the Shield Charm faster than anyone else in Dumbledore's Army. [60] He could also perform simpler charms, such as the Femaportus [56] and the Repulsor Charm (though his aim was not very good with these). He could also produce a non-corporeal Patronus, which was very advanced magic, as well as evidence of superior magical ability. It was likely that he would eventually manage to produce a full, corporeal Patronus, and he also improved his overall Charms work during his time as an Auror.

However (as confirmed by McGonagall [56]), some of this was likely caused by using someone else's wand, low self-esteem, and the anxiety caused by the relentless bullying from many of his classmates and Snape. When he found courage and self-confidence in his later years, Neville's magical abilities as a wizard grew, and he proved to be a powerful wizard in his own right.

Herbology: As confirmed by Professor Sprout, who taught Herbology at Hogwarts, Neville was particularly talented in Herbology. In his first year, Neville's score in Herbology was so good that it even compensated for his failures in Potions, and he was the fastest student in the class: in 1996, he was the first to extract a capsule from a Snargaluff plant. [57] He then earned an "Outstanding" grade on his O.W.L. exam, [58] helped Professor Sprout organize the defenses around Hogwarts with the Devil's Snare, employed Mandrakes in the Battle of Hogwarts to attack Death Eaters, and worked as Hogwarts' Herbology Professor after the Second Wizarding War. Neville's skills in Herbology would later serve him well in his brief career as an Auror. He would improve his already considerable skills in the field to the point that he was eventually hired as the Herbology professor at Hogwarts, succeeding his mentor, Pomona Sprout. He had a round face,[9] was short, chubby, and had blond hair.[55] He also had somewhat crooked teeth. Pansy Parkinson had once called him "fat," but this may have been an exaggeration, as she frequently made disparaging remarks about Gryffindor students.[13]

It can be assumed that Neville was among the spectators of the Third Task, supporting Harry along with his fellow Gryffindors. He was also most likely among the mass of students who attended the memorial service for Cedric Diggory, after Cedric was murdered on Lord Voldemort's orders.

Fourth year

Hermione Granger: "Neville, are you okay?" Neville: "Oh, yes, I'm fine. When Moody demonstrated the curse on a spider, Neville was terrified; he gripped his desk so tightly his knuckles turned white. Hermione noticed this and called for the professor to stop. After class, Moody—who was actually Barty Crouch Jr., one of Neville's parents' attackers, disguised using Polyjuice Potion—took Neville to his office for a cup of tea.

Having heard from Professor Sprout about Neville's aptitude for Herbology, "Moody" encouraged Neville by telling him what Sprout had said and gave him a number of books he thought Neville would enjoy. One of these was Magical Water Plants of the Mediterranean, which Crouch wanted Harry to read to learn all about Gillyweed for the second task, [29] but he was stubbornly searching the library. [30]

A few days later in class, Neville was subjected to the Imperius Curse by Moody, under the pretext of letting the class know what it felt like. Under Moody's influence, Neville performed a series of "rather amazing gymnastics" that he could not have normally performed. [31]
