Blu the Macaw (Rio movie)

Blu, the main character in Rio, is a domesticated Spix's Macaw who can't fly. Smuggled from Rio de Janeiro as a baby, Blu was raised by humans in Minnesota and acts like one. He eats human food, reads, and can use a computer and skateboard. In the first Rio film, Blu is taken to Rio to mate with Jewel, a free-spirited female Spix's Macaw. Blu (Blu Gunderson), the main protagonist of the animated Rio film franchise, a domesticated, socially awkward Spix's macaw who can't fly but uses human-like intelligence, eventually learning to fly to save his species with his mate, Jewel, who is a wild macaw. While he famously struggles with flying for much of the first film, his ability to dance and shake to the beat is a central part of his journey to finding freedom and belonging in Brazil.
