Buildings and infrastructure
Saloons are traditional establishments common in the Wild West, attracting cowboys, miners, soldiers, and other frontiersmen. They were typically located on the main streets of cattle towns.
Saloon architecture was often single-story, narrow, and long, with a two-story false facade. A bar ran along one side wall. It was made of polished oak, mahogany, or walnut. Upscale saloons might feature brass spittoons, gaming and billiard tables, and a dance floor.
One of the distinctive features of many saloons was the swinging "batwing" doors, which were positioned at knee or chest level.
The second floor was often used as a hotel.
Saloon menus included alcoholic beverages, often made with questionable ingredients. The most popular drink was beer, sometimes brewed right on the premises.
Traditional entertainment included gambling (cards, dice), and later, billiards, bowling, and darts. Sometimes saloons featured pianists, dancers, or small theatrical performances.
Boarding houses or hotels where cowboys could get themselves ready - shave, take a shower or bath.
The huts were built from available materials: logs in forested areas, and sod or adobe bricks in prairie and semi-desert areas.
Ranch buildings included pastures, barns, feed storage, and living quarters for the manager and cowboys.
