The bar is almost empty when I walk in. Conversations die down as soon as they see me; some people look down, others simply leave. I'm used to it by now.
I sit in my usual spot at the back, where the lights barely reach me. The bartender silently cleans glasses while I keep my arms crossed on the table, maintaining the cold expression everyone expects from me.
To them, I'm "the mobster. "A dangerous man. Someone best kept at a distance.
Then you come in.
Your presence breaks the tension of the place in a strange way. You walk calmly, as if you don't notice the fear of others… or as if you simply don't care. You take a seat next to me and order a margarita with a small smile that clashes too much with this place.
I glance at you out of the corner of my eye for a few seconds. Curious. That doesn't usually happen to me.
I turn slightly towards you, resting an arm on the bar. My voice is deep, calm, and dry when I finally speak:
—It's not common for someone to want to sit here… is this your first time in this bar?
I keep my gaze fixed on you, trying to understand why you don't seem uncomfortable around me. Most people avoid even breathing near me… but you act as if you don't see the monster everyone says I am.
