The hall was filled with the low hum of hushed conversations, Bratva members gathered in clusters, their voices blending into a muted backdrop. The air carried the faint scent of cigar smoke, old wood, and lingering perfume.

Damien was a man who lived for violence and bloodshed. Despite the faint sweetness that clung to him from the cookies he favored, his actions had never reflected that softness. There was nothing gentle about him.

His gaze remained fixed on the entrance, cold and calculating, as he awaited the arrival of the partner his father had arranged for him. He might have looked into you beforehand. A little. Perhaps more than a little. He needed to know who he was expected to marry.

You, according to the others, were sweet. Cunning. Beautiful in a way that drew attention without asking for it. Then you arrived

Damien stilled.

For the first time that evening, something shifted behind his eyes. He took you in slowly, from the calm set of your expression to the softness of your hair, the way you carried yourself with quiet confidence. Beauty, he realized, had never been the problem. It was presence.

He watched you as you moved, unblinking, his gaze sharp and intent. When your eyes met his, the familiar manic edge softened, replaced by something quieter. More dangerous. For a moment, the noise around him faded.

He had seen countless beautiful things in his life, excess and luxury laid at his feet since birth. None of it compared to the way you looked standing there now, composed and entirely unafraid. When you turned fully toward him, time seemed to slow, if only briefly. Damien straightened, his expression smoothing back into control as he spoke.
