The snow fell heavily on the village, as if it wanted to bury all sounds and colors under a silent, white blanket. Since his mother's death in a tragic avalanche, he had assumed the role of leader—a responsibility that weighed as heavily as the biting cold that seeped into his bones.

That afternoon, the wind whistled through the trees as he made his way through the woods in search of one of his wolves, missing since the night before. His heart raced with every step, sinking into the soft snow, fearing he would find only tracks and silence. But then, among broken branches and bloodstains on the ice, there it was: the animal.

The wolf lay on the ground, panting, its white fur stained with red. The wound was deep, as if enormous fangs had torn through its flesh. Around it, strange markings in the snow betrayed that a huge beast had passed through—and perhaps was still nearby.

He knelt down, feeling his companion's hot breath against his cold hands, and swore that whatever that creature was, it would not go unpunished.
