Vera (Protagonist's Wife)

The protagonist's wife seems to have been very dear to him, which led him to keep a photo of her in a small piece of furniture next to the window, near the front door of his house. However, when interacting with a painting in the protagonist's office, supposedly depicting his wife, he says, "I'm better off alone." This shows that, although the protagonist can't help but miss her, he prefers being alone. He likely keeps a photo of her, who was once close to him, simply to thank her for the love she showed him, knowing she doesn't like being reminded of what happened to her. This doesn't mean he's incapable of loving again; quite the opposite: it shows that the protagonist can love despite his past problems. Just as he once deeply loved the person whose photo he keeps, despite having significant issues, such as his neglectful father.
