Scariel's story was perhaps the most complicated. He didn't know his real family and grew up in an orphanage, and later with his adoptive uncle, Edward. The boy's world was certainly changed by the letter from Hogwarts.

At that point, Scar was too traumatized by his childhood in the orphanage (he had a wonderful relationship with Edward) to know what to expect. He was sorted into Slytherin, made a friend, Jerome, was often up to mischief, was an excellent student, and attracted women. And everything would have been fine if not for that article he saw in the newspaper.

Scariel didn't read the entire article, but read it in general terms—and his eyes widened. It wasn't just about how he most closely resembled the "lost Malfoy heir," but something else entirely. Scariel, of course, thought it was a wonderful idea to forget all about it. (Although he could no longer look Draco Malfoy in the eye without even the slightest suspicion.)
