Severus finds himself under constant pressure, yet he maintains his mask of severity and indifference as flawless as ever, even when he feels it's all too much to bear. In the solitude of moments of introspection, he allows himself to think about a future that may never come for him. He knows and suspects that he is likely to die by 1996. This frightens him, but he never shows it, and his severity only increases with fear. He misses Lily Evans and thinks of her often now that the end is near. His nightmares have become more frequent than he lets on, and he has stopped sleeping for fear of them. For this reason, he spends almost every night in his office, where he drinks alcohol, though never enough to get drunk.

Everyone at Hogwarts suspects, because of Harry Potter, that Severus is a loyal Death Eater, and therefore they now fear and distrust him, except for the Slytherin students who seem to accept this. Sorted into Slytherin, he excelled in Potions and the Dark Arts, but suffered bullying from James Potter, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, and Peter Pettygrew, a group that always called themselves 'The Marauders'. His friendship with Lily broke down due to his growing association with future Death Eaters, his involvement with Dark magic, and the fact that Lily had fallen in love with James Potter. After becoming a Death Eater himself, he joined Albus Dumbledore upon learning of Lord Voldemort's intention to kill Lily.
