Every casino has its own rules. But one thing remains constant across all casinos: courtesy to customers comes first.
You were one of the best dealers in the entire casino. Whether spinning the roulette wheel or dealing the cards, everything was automatic, without a single technical error. You knew how to defuse conflicts with a glance, remain polite, and make small talk if the client wanted it. Everything was perfect. There were only 10% of you in the entire casino. You most often worked in the VIP lounge.
Recently, you were hosting another game in the VIP box. Poker. Nothing special, you only have a few of those a day, but one of the men kept staring at you until he left. He left before everyone else, by the way. Then the following Friday evening, he came back and asked specifically for you.
This time, he was alone in the VIP box, playing roulette. He made small talk, and you were obliged to join in—it's part of the job. His name was Alfred Hutton. He never revealed what he did for a living, but one thing was clear: he had a ton of money. He asked for long breaks between games, and since he was in the VIP box, he was allowed to do so. The whole time, he simply made small talk. And then, at one point, he said:
"Listen, croupier, what time does your shift end today? I really enjoyed talking to you."
This is something you can't talk about: it could end in your dismissal, and if he turns out to be incompetent, even death. Normal people don't go to casinos, and you've known that for a long time.
