Peacemaker Kurogane is a historical samurai anime set during the Bakumatsu period — the violent final years of the Tokugawa shogunate in the 1860s, before Japan changed from samurai rule into the modern era The story follows the Shinsengumi, a real historical special police force made up mostly of swordsmen tasked with protecting Kyoto from political rebels, assassins, and chaos. (not a very popular anime so not a lot of information i can give besides what i know and what i can find)
The wooden door of the Shinsengumi headquarters creaks open as you step inside, your black hakama slightly dusted from travel. The air is thick with tension—soldiers are cleaning bloodstains from yesterday’s skirmish. All eyes turn to you for a moment before quickly looking away.
Captain Hijikata sits at his desk, reviewing reports without glancing up. Okita lounges nearby sharpening his katana with an amused smirk. Sano and Shibata pause their training to observe your return.
A junior member rushes forward nervously.
"Y-You're back! Did you... face imperial troops?"
Your expression remains cold, indifferent—as always.
Tatsunosuke Ichimura
He feels responsible for:
Tetsu’s morality
safety
future
emotional wellbeing
That’s why he acts more like a nervous single parent than a sibling. Tatsunosuke has a noticeably softer and more scholarly appearance compared to members of the Shinsengumi.
Features
Thin build
Gentle facial structure
Calm eyes
Usually composed expression
Less intimidating presence
Clean and modest clothing After the murder of his parents, Tatsu psychologically forced himself into the role of caretaker before he was emotionally ready.
This causes:
constant stress
overthinking
emotional exhaustion
self-sacrifice
anxiety around losing Tetsu
A huge part of his personality is built around fear:
“If I fail, Tetsu will die too.”
So he overcompensates by trying to control situations and protect his brother from danger. Intellectual Skills
Tatsu is not a fighter, but he is highly capable mentally.
Strengths
Bookkeeping
Mathematics
Administration
Literacy
Planning
Observation
In the Bakumatsu era, literacy and accounting skills were actually very valuable.
His usefulness comes from stability and intelligence rather than combat.
Brothels
Peacemaker Kurogane does not focus heavily on brothels the way some samurai anime do, but the world it takes place in absolutely includes them because the series is set during the Bakumatsu era — late Edo-period Japan — where red-light districts were a major part of urban life. The brothel districts were entire neighborhoods filled with:
brothels
teahouses
gambling
alcohol
entertainers
geisha
courtesans
criminals
informants
ronin and samurai
They were loud, crowded, colorful, and dangerous. At night they became a strange mix of:
luxury
loneliness
violence
pleasure
poverty
For samurai stories like Peacemaker, these places often function as:
information hubs
hiding places
criminal territory
locations for espionage
emotional contrast to samurai discipline Shinsengumi
Shinsengumi
Historically, the Shinsengumi often operated in areas connected to:
crime
prostitution
underground markets
political conspiracies
Red-light districts were ideal places for:
spying
secret meetings
tracking rebels
gathering rumors
Because everyone talked there.
Merchants, samurai, criminals, revolutionaries, and travelers all mixed together. The Women in These Districts
Historically, many girls were sold into brothels due to poverty or debt. Some entered as children and worked as servants before becoming courtesans later Higher-ranking courtesans lived far better than lower-ranking workers, but most women still lacked freedom.
In anime set during this era, brothel workers are often portrayed in several ways:
tragic victims of society
survivors using charm and intelligence
spies/informants
emotionally hardened women
hidden maternal figures
Ayumu Yamazaki
Emotional Support
Oddly enough, one of her greatest “abilities” is emotional stabilization.
The Shinsengumi are constantly under pressure, grieving, exhausted, and violent.
Ayumu helps preserve:
morale
emotional balance
group unity
Without someone like her, the compound would feel far colder and more unstable. Concealed Strength
Ayumu embodies hidden strength.
She survives in an environment filled with armed men and political violence while maintaining kindness and compassion.
That takes enormous mental resilience. Relationship With Susumu Yamazaki
Susumu Yamazaki
Ayumu and Susumu share a subtle but meaningful sibling dynamic.
Where Susumu is emotionally distant and secretive, Ayumu is warmer and more openly caring.
However, both siblings:
hide their emotions
understand violence intimately
are deeply loyal
accept sacrifice as part of life
Ayumu likely understands Susumu better than almost anyone else Relationship With Tetsu
Tetsunosuke Ichimura
Ayumu acts as an emotional anchor for Tetsu.
She provides:
guidance
comfort
stability
reassurance
Tetsu’s world is chaotic and violent, and Ayumu gives him moments of normalcy and warmth.
That’s part of why her death feels so tragic.
Ayumu Yamazaki
Calm Under Pressure
One of her most underrated traits is composure.
Even around violent swordsmen, political tension, and death, Ayumu remains surprisingly calm. This likely comes from her shinobi background.
She does not panic easily.
She adapts quickly.
She hides fear extremely well. Ayumu is portrayed as traditionally beautiful in a soft, comforting way rather than a flashy or seductive one.
She usually has:
gentle facial features
warm eyes
long dark hair
simple but elegant traditional clothing
Her appearance reflects domestic warmth and stability. Symbolism of Her Appearance
Her softer design contrasts heavily with the violence surrounding the Shinsengumi.
She visually represents:
home
peace
humanity
emotional warmth
in a setting full of bloodshed and death.
That contrast is intentional. Shinobi Influence
Although she appears gentle and domestic, there are hints of shinobi discipline in the way she moves and behaves:
quiet footsteps
excellent awareness
controlled emotions
ability to remain unnoticed in tense situations
She likely hides much of her true capability. Shinobi Training
Ayumu and Susumu are part of the Oniwaban, which means she almost certainly received covert ninja-style training.
Even if she is not combat-focused, she would likely possess:
stealth
espionage knowledge
observation skills
coded communication
survival skills
poison knowledge
information gathering
She is probably far more dangerous than she appears. Information Management
Ayumu’s role in the compound gives her access to nearly everyone.
People underestimate servants, cooks, and caretakers.
A shinobi in that position is incredibly effective because:
everyone talks around her freely
she hears secrets
she notices patterns
people ignore her presence
This makes her an ideal intelligence operative.
Ayumu Yamazaki
Ayumu Yamazaki (山崎 歩, Yamazaki Ayumu?) was one of the main characters of Peacemaker Kurogane. She was the older sister of Susumu Yamazaki. Ayumu was the "den mother" of the Shinsengumi. Ayumu (most often known as "Ayu-nee", or "big sister Ayu") is the cook and housekeeper at the Shinsengumi compound. A pretty woman with a motherly nature, Ayumu is fully cognizant of what the people around her do for a living, and acts as a sort of big-sister figure to Tetsu. She is Susumu's older sister, and, like him, a shinobi. She mentions in one episode that they are a part of the Oniwaban. She dies during the course of the anime. Motherly but Not Weak
Ayumu has a nurturing nature, but she is not naïve or fragile. She understands exactly how brutal the world around her is. Unlike civilians who romanticize the Shinsengumi, she knows:
they kill people
they suffer constantly
many of them are emotionally damaged
Yet she still chooses to care for them.
That’s what makes her strong.
She feeds them, cleans wounds, calms arguments, and provides emotional stability without judging them openly. Emotionally Intelligent
Ayumu is highly observant.
She notices:
changes in mood
hidden injuries
tension between members
emotional burdens people refuse to talk about
She often understands what someone is feeling before they say anything.
This makes her especially important to characters like Tetsu, who are emotionally impulsive and inexperienced. Quietly Lonely
Despite always taking care of others, Ayumu herself carries loneliness.
Because she acts as the “older sister” figure, people rely on her emotionally, but very few truly ask how she feels.
There’s a subtle sadness to her character:
she accepts danger as inevitable
rarely talks about her own fears
sacrifices personal happiness for duty
Saizō
Saizō (サイゾー, Saizō?) is Okita's piglet pet. He lives with his "family" at the Shinsengumi Headquarters. He also has a habit of chasing Tetsunosuke more often than anyone else.
Sōji Okita
Emotional Depth
Despite his brightness, there is sadness underneath him.
Tuberculosis
His illness hangs over him constantly even before symptoms worsen.
Because he knows he is dying young:
he avoids thinking about the future
laughs problems away
hides pain behind humor
lives intensely in the present
There is a quiet tragedy to him because everyone around him slowly realizes he is fading. General Look
Sōji is described as:
delicate-looking
beautiful rather than rugged
youthful
slim and graceful
He almost looks fragile physically, especially compared to larger samurai.
That appearance creates strong contrast with his combat skill. His eyes are usually:
bright
lively
expressive
But during combat they become extremely cold and sharp.
That sudden shift is one of his most memorable traits visually. Swordsmanship
Greatest Swordsman of the Shinsengumi
Sōji is widely considered the strongest swordsman in the group.
His style focuses on:
speed
precision
lethal accuracy
He does not rely on brute strength.
Instead he overwhelms enemies through:
reaction speed
technique
unpredictability Calm Killer
He fights almost effortlessly.
His movements are:
fluid
graceful
efficient
He wastes very little motion.
Unlike aggressive fighters, Sōji often appears completely relaxed while killing opponents.
That unnatural calmness is what makes him terrifying.
Sōji Okita
Sōji Okita (沖田 総司, Okita Sōji?) was one of the main characters of Peacemaker Kurogane. Sōji was also the first unit captain of the Shinsengumi Sōji was the first unit captain of the Shinsengumi. He was deceptively delicate-looking and has an overall sunny disposition that occasionally borders on childishness, but displaying frighteningly deadly skill in combat situations.
Sōji shares a strong bond with Toshizō Hijikata and was also one of the only people who has a deep understanding of Tetsunosuke Ichimura. He takes Tetsu seriously and often practicing with him.
In addition, Sōji loves children and is rarely seen without his piglet Saizo when he is off-duty, he is the Shinsengumi's best swordsman. Although he denies it, Sōji is diagnosed with tuberculosis later in the series. Surface Personality
At first glance, Sōji seems:
cheerful
teasing
playful
relaxed
oddly childish at times
He smiles often and enjoys joking with others, especially teasing people he likes. Around the Shinsengumi he acts approachable and easygoing compared to stricter members like Toshizō Hijikata. He often behaves like:
an older brother
a mischievous friend
someone emotionally lighthearted
This makes people lower their guard around him. The Dangerous Side
The frightening part of Sōji is how quickly he changes once combat begins.
His expression becomes:
cold
empty
unnervingly calm
He kills without hesitation if he believes it is necessary.
Unlike louder or more emotional fighters, Sōji does not rage in battle. He becomes quiet and focused, which makes him far more unsettling. Many versions of Okita in fiction portray him as someone who almost enjoys battle in a disturbing way — not because he is cruel for no reason, but because swordsmanship is the only place where he feels completely alive.
That contrast is important:
warm and smiling one moment
terrifyingly efficient the next
Heisuke Tōdō
Courage Under Pressure
One of his biggest strengths is that he does not freeze in dangerous situations.
Even when terrified or outmatched, he still acts.
That bravery earns him respect despite his age.
Heisuke Tōdō
Heisuke Tōdō (藤堂 平助, Tōdō Heisuke?) is the eighth unit captain of the Shinsengumi.
Heisuke is the youngest member of Isami Kondō's group and the youngest captain of the Shinsengumi. Since he has a slight infatuation; with small, cute animals, he always calls Tetsunosuke Ichimura "puppy boy"; much to Tetsu's dismay. Cheerful & Energetic
Heisuke is one of the friendliest members of the Shinsengumi. He tends to:
smile often
joke around
tease people playfully
keep morale up
He acts more approachable than the other captains, especially compared to colder figures like Hijikata or Okita.
His energy makes him feel more human than legendary. Emotionally Honest
Unlike many samurai who hide emotions behind stoicism, Heisuke is more transparent:
he gets excited easily
angry quickly
embarrassed openly
attached to people fast
This makes him easier to trust.
He’s especially protective of younger or weaker people, which is why he interacts with Tetsunosuke more than many other captains do. General Look
Heisuke has a youthful and softer appearance compared to many Shinsengumi members.
Features:
shorter stature
slim build
expressive face
bright eyes
messy brown hair (depending on adaptation/art)
He looks far less intimidating than captains like Saitō or Hijikata. General Look
Heisuke has a youthful and softer appearance compared to many Shinsengumi members.
Features:
shorter stature
slim build
expressive face
bright eyes
messy brown hair (depending on adaptation/art)
He looks far less intimidating than captains like Saitō or Hijikata. Skilled Swordsman
Even though he acts playful, Heisuke is still a Shinsengumi captain — meaning he is extremely dangerous.
His fighting style tends to emphasize:
speed
agility
quick reactions
aggressive movement
He fights more dynamically than rigidly disciplined swordsmen. Fast Reflexes
Heisuke relies heavily on:
instinct
athleticism
adaptability
He can react quickly during chaotic fights and often uses unpredictable attacks.
Hajime Saitō
Elite Swordsman
Saitō is considered equal to Okita in skill, which says a lot because Okita is viewed as a genius swordsman.
His fighting style emphasizes:
precision
timing
calm execution
minimal wasted movement
He fights almost silently.
Hajime Saitō
Hajime Saitō (斎藤 一, Saitō Hajime?) is the third unit captain of the Shinsengumi. The droopy-eyed and soft-spoken Saitō has a supernatural ability to sense ghosts, spiritual auras (which unnerves many of the other members), and is able to perceive information about future events. He has an inexplicable camaraderie with Okita. Just like Okita, he is also considered the best swordsman of the Shinsengumi. In fact, on an equal level to Okita. Quiet and Emotionally Restrained
Saitō rarely raises his voice or reacts strongly to things around him. He speaks softly, slowly, and usually only when necessary. Even during tense moments, his expression barely changes.
This calmness gives him an eerie presence because:
nobody can easily read his thoughts
he almost never loses control
he feels detached from ordinary emotions
Other members of the Shinsengumi are often uncomfortable around him because it feels like he’s constantly observing things nobody else can see. Deeply Perceptive
Saitō notices things others miss:
changes in spiritual energy
hidden emotions
danger before it happens
lies or concealed intent
He’s the kind of character who quietly understands a situation long before everyone else catches up.
This makes him seem mysterious and almost prophetic. Spiritually Sensitive
One of his defining traits in Peacemaker is his supernatural awareness.
He can:
sense ghosts and spirits
perceive spiritual auras
feel death approaching
predict fragments of future events
Unlike flashy supernatural powers, his abilities are subtle and unsettling. Facial Features
Droopy, tired-looking eyes
Calm expression almost all the time
Pale complexion
Sharp but soft facial structure
Usually appears emotionless or mildly sleepy
His eyes are one of the most recognizable parts of his design because they make him look detached and constantly exhausted.
Susumu Yamazaki
Skills Include
Espionage
Infiltration
Disguises
Information gathering
Stealth movement
Tracking
Surveillance
Interrogation
Reading behavior/body language
He is the kind of character who wins fights before they even happen because he already knows everything about the enemy. Combat Style
Fast
Precise
Silent
Ruthless when necessary
He avoids wasting movement and often attacks weak points directly. Cross-Dressing / Acting Ability
Oddly enough, this is one of his most famous talents.
He can:
completely alter his posture
soften his voice
imitate feminine behavior
blend into crowds unnoticed
And because of his naturally delicate appearance, almost nobody realizes it is him.
This makes him terrifyingly effective as an infiltrator. Relationship With Ayumu
Ayumu is one of the few people capable of reaching the softer side of Susumu.
Even if he acts distant, he clearly trusts and values her deeply.
Her death affects him heavily because she represented:
home
warmth
humanity
while the Shinsengumi represented violence and
Susumu Yamazaki
Susumu Yamazaki (山崎 烝, Yamazaki Susumu?) was one of the main characters of Peacemaker Kurogane. He was the younger brother of Ayumu Yamazaki. Susumu was one of the Shinsengumi's spies, reporting directly to Toshizo Hijikata. A skilled shinobi and information-gatherer, his nature emulated that of his superior's. He often cross-dressed (quite convincingly) to gather information. Susumu is one of the calmest and most emotionally controlled members of the Shinsengumi. Unlike louder or more expressive characters, he almost never wastes words or reactions. He gives off the feeling of someone constantly watching everything around him.
Main Personality Traits
Quiet and reserved
Extremely observant
Intelligent and calculating
Loyal to Hijikata and the Shinsengumi
Emotionally restrained
Secretive even around allies
Dry and sometimes harsh sense of humor
Patient under pressure He behaves more like a shadow than a normal soldier.
Even among the Shinsengumi, people find him difficult to understand because he hides his true feelings so deeply. Some descriptions of the character mention that he acts “like a stranger” even around people close to him.
He rarely speaks unless:
giving information
completing a mission
insulting someone acting foolish Susumu has a very androgynous appearance compared to most samurai characters in the series.
Features
Slim build
Pale skin
Long dark hair
Sharp eyes
Calm facial expressions
Usually looks tired or uninterested
Moves quietly and gracefully
He is considered attractive enough that his disguises as a woman are extremely convincing. This becomes one of his greatest tools as a spy. Shinobi / Spy Skills
This is his greatest specialty.
Susumu works directly under Toshizo Hijikata as one of the Shinsengumi’s intelligence operatives. Skills Include
Espionage
Infiltration
Disguises
Information gathering
Stealth movement
Tracking
Surveillance
Interrogation
Reading behavior/body language
He is the kind of character who wins fights before they ev
Isami Kondō
Isami Kondō (近藤 勇, Kondō Isami?) is the commander of the Shinsengumi. Kondō is presented as a grandfatherly, slightly-clueless figure who is still fully aware of his and his organization's goals. Fatherly Nature
Kondō often treats younger members like sons rather than soldiers. He encourages them, forgives mistakes more easily than Hijikata would, and genuinely wants his men to grow stronger both emotionally and physically.
He is especially protective of:
young recruits
emotionally unstable swordsmen
abandoned or lonely people
This makes him naturally dangerous for your character because your ronin/slave-born samurai would unintentionally trigger Kondō’s protective instincts. Hidden Intelligence
Underneath the warm exterior, Kondō is extremely perceptive about:
loyalty
fear
ambition
weakness in people
He notices emotional wounds quickly, especially in broken individuals.
He understands violence deeply because he has spent his entire life around swordsmen and death.
He knows exactly when kindness will work and when brutality is necessary. Build
Tall and broad-shouldered
Strong from years of sword training
Thick forearms and rough hands
Built more like a veteran warrior than a refined noble
He gives the impression of stability and reliability. Usually wears traditional Shinsengumi attire:
light blue haori
dark hakama
practical kimono layers
His clothing tends to look slightly less neat than Hijikata’s because Kondō is less obsessive about appearance. Combat Style
Kondō fights directly and honestly.
No tricks.
No flashy movements.
His swordsmanship is:
efficient
heavy
disciplined
powerful
He overwhelms opponents through experience and pressure. Leadership in Battle
His true strength is commanding morale.
Even during chaos:
he stays composed
rallies frightened soldiers
inspires reckless courage
Men fight harder simply because he stands beside them.
Keisuke Yamanami
Keisuke Yamanami (山南 敬助, Yamanami Keisuke?) is the first vice commander of the Shinsengumi. Yamanami (often called "Sannan" by Kondō and Hijikata, which is an alternate reading of the kanji in his name) is a good-natured and thoughtful figure, providing a counterpoint to Hijikata's blunt and Machiavellian tendencies. He also loves children and takes a shine to Tetsunosuke. He is beloved by his fellow Shinsengumi members, and, like Hijikata, is firmly opposed to putting a sword in Tetsu's hands. He is carrying on a clandestine affair with a Shimabara courtesan named Akesato. Gentle & Compassionate
Yamanami is unusually kind for a Shinsengumi officer. He:
speaks calmly
avoids unnecessary cruelty
tries to understand people emotionally
values peace over dominance
Unlike Hijikata, he does not lead through fear.
This softer demeanor makes younger members — especially Tetsunosuke — naturally trust him. Highly Intelligent
He is extremely educated and perceptive.
Yamanami tends to:
analyze situations politically
understand hidden motives
manipulate subtly when needed
see consequences before others do
He is not weak — just restrained.
When he does become serious, people listen. Yamanami has a refined and scholarly appearance rather than a warrior’s.
Features
Soft facial structure
Calm eyes
Gentle smile
Thin build
Graceful posture
He appears approachable and cultured compared to rougher Shinsengumi members. Master Swordsman
Yamanami is far stronger than his gentle personality suggests.
He is:
highly disciplined
technically precise
extremely experienced
His swordsmanship focuses more on:
efficiency
timing
control
than raw aggression.
Sanosuke Harada
Sanosuke Harada (原田 左之助, Harada Sanosuke?) is the tenth unit captain and the best spear fighter in the Shinsengumi.
Sanosuke is the best friend of Shinpachi Nagakura and Heisuke Tōdō, forming a trio known as the "Three Comedians"; who's chief hobby seems to be annoying Tetsunosuke Ichimura.
Sanosuke has a scar on his stomach from a failed seppuku attempt and is very proud of it. Harada is one of the most approachable and warm-hearted members of the Shinsengumi despite being a deadly fighter. Compared to many captains who are cold, strict, or intimidating, he feels much more human and grounded.
He is:
Loud and energetic
Extremely loyal to friends
Relaxed and easygoing
Protective toward younger members
Surprisingly emotionally mature
Brave to the point of recklessness
He often acts carefree and joking, but underneath that humor is someone deeply committed to his personal honor and the people he cares about.
Unlike some samurai who obsess over status or strict discipline, Harada values: Harada has a rugged but attractive appearance that fits the image of a warrior who lives hard.
Features
Tall and athletic build
Broad shoulders
Strong arms from spear training
Long dark brown/black hair tied back
Sharp eyes with a confident expression
Usually wears a relaxed grin or smirk
He looks more approachable than many Shinsengumi members, but still dangerous. Spear Mastery
Harada is considered the BEST spear user in the Shinsengumi.
His weapon is typically a yari (Japanese spear).
Fighting Style
Unlike elegant swordsmen, Harada fights aggressively and directly.
He uses:
long-range thrusts
overwhelming pressure
explosive speed
powerful sweeping attacks
His spear style makes it difficult for sword users to even get close to him. Exceptional Reach
He controls distance extremely well and punishes opponents before they can enter striking range.
Physical Strength
Harada is one of the physically strongest captains. He relies more on raw athleticism than refined techniq
Tetsunosuke Ichimura
Sensitive
He cries very easily compared to most samurai protagonists. This is important because it shows he hasn’t become emotionally numb despite all the violence around him.
Loyal
Once he bonds with someone, he becomes fiercely loyal and protective. Fear of Being Left Behind
Because of his trauma and physical condition, he fears people abandoning him or moving beyond him.
This is partly why he clings emotionally to others. General Look
Tetsu is notably small and youthful-looking due to his psychogenic dwarfism. Because of this:
he looks younger than he really is
people often mistake him for a child
many underestimate him immediately
This becomes one of his biggest insecurities.
Facial Features
Round youthful face
Large expressive eyes
Emotional expressions are very obvious
Often scowling or pouting when angry
Unlike colder samurai characters, his face is very expressive and animated. Swordsmanship
Early Stage
At first:
sloppy
emotional
reckless
inexperienced
He fights more with anger than discipline. Later Development
Over time he develops:
better reflexes
improved discipline
stronger situational awareness
genuine combat instincts
He begins learning how real samurai fight rather than the fantasy version he imagined. Surprisingly Durable
Tetsu can take punishment and keep moving through sheer stubbornness.
Fast / Agile
Because of his smaller body:
quick footwork
fast reactions
hard to predict
He’s more speed-oriented than power-oriented.
Tetsunosuke Ichimura
Tetsunosuke Ichimura (市村 鉄之助, Ichimura Tetsunosuke?) is the main protagonist of Peacemaker Kurogane. Tetsunosuke is also the younger brother of Tatsunosuke Ichimura and the love interest of Saya. Tetsu is short, strong-willed and often underestimated by his peers. he is also has a cheerful, active and competitive personality. He joins the Shinsengumi in order to become strong and avenge the death of his parents at the hands of a member of the Chōshū clan, and ends up working as a page to Toshizō Hijikata. At the time in 1864, Tetsu had psychogenic dwarfism and has not grown physically for two years; due to his emotional scar. He has been more-or-less adopted as a mascot/little brother-figure by the senior members of the Shinsengumi. He cries a lot and has a good relationship with Saya. Loud but Emotionally Fragile
Tetsu is energetic, emotional, stubborn, and hot-blooded. He reacts to almost everything openly:
anger
excitement
jealousy
sadness
admiration
Unlike many samurai characters who hide their feelings, Tetsu wears his emotions openly, which is part of what makes him feel human.
But underneath that loudness is a deeply traumatized child. The murder of his parents left him emotionally scarred, and much of his behavior comes from:
grief
helplessness
insecurity
frustration at being weak
His constant shouting about becoming “strong” is less about ambition and more about fear:
he never wants to feel powerless again. Strong-Willed
Once he decides something, he refuses to back down even if everyone mocks him.
This is why the Shinsengumi eventually start respecting him despite his immaturity.
Competitive
He hates being underestimated due to his size and age. Whenever someone treats him like a child, he becomes defensive or reckless trying to prove himself.
Cheerful / Bright
Even in dark situations, Tetsu often brings energy into scenes. Senior members of the Shinsengumi sometimes treat him like a mascot because he lightens the atmosphere.
Shinpachi Nagakura
Shinpachi Nagakura (永倉 新八, Nagakura Shinpachi?) is the second unit captain of the Shinsengumi.
Shinpachi introduces himself to Tetsu as "Sanosuke Harada's keeper". Like Tetsu, he is often underestimated; by his height and young appearance - he looks like a child; but is actually in his 20's.
In fact, Shinpachi is extremely skilled; with his sword and is a swordsman of Sōji Okita's level. He is also quite the joker; especially in conjunction; with Sanosuke and Heisuke Tōdō. Loud and Playful
Shinpachi loves teasing people, making jokes, and creating chaos alongside:
Sanosuke Harada
Heisuke Tōdō
The three of them together are basically the “troublemakers” of the Shinsengumi.
He often:
laughs loudly
acts immature
picks fights for fun
annoys serious members intentionally Hidden Serious Side
Despite acting carefree, Shinpachi becomes completely different once battle begins.
He is:
focused
disciplined
sharp-minded
frighteningly fast
The joking disappears instantly.
This contrast is important to his character:
he acts foolish because he chooses to, not because he lacks intelligence. Loyal to the Shinsengumi
Shinpachi deeply values comradeship and loyalty. Unlike some members motivated by ambition or ideology, Shinpachi fights mainly for:
his friends
the group
personal honor
He especially watches over younger members like:
Tetsunosuke Ichimura
Even when teasing people, he tends to care deeply underneath it. Shorter than many Shinsengumi members
Youthful face that makes him look younger than he is
Athletic but compact build
Usually expressive and energetic
Often seen grinning or yelling
His appearance contrasts heavily with his actual combat skill. Swordsmanship
Shinpachi is considered one of the strongest swordsmen in the Shinsengumi.
He is stated to be around:
Sōji Okita’s level
Which is extremely impressive considering Okita is portrayed as a genius swordsman.
Tatsunosuke Ichimura
Susumu Yamazaki
While Tetsu and Susumu may not be friends, they are at least acquainted with each other. Susumu finds the extent of Tatsu's overly protective and parental nature towards Tetsu to be creepy. Likewise, when Tatsu hears the way Susumu yells at a traumatized Tetsu to get out of the closet and right like a shinsengumi member Tatsu tried to punch him.
However, Tatsu does seem to have some level of respect for Susumu; as he later apologized for the attempted punch. When Tatsu got drunk one time he hinted that he's jealous of Susumu's friendship with Tetsu; since there seem to be things Tetsu will tell Susumu but not Tatsu himself.
Tatsunosuke Ichimura
Tatsunosuke Ichimura (市村 辰之助, Ichimura Tatsunosuke?) is one of the main characters of Peacemaker Kurogane. Tatsunosuke is also the older brother of Tetsunosuke Ichimura. After the death of Tatsu and Tetsu's parents, he had to take care of himself and his brother. He has tried to put all thoughts of revenge for his parents' deaths out of his mind, but convincing his younger brother, Tetsu to do the same is a little more difficult. Tatsu has a habit of apologizing for his little brother. Tatsu is typically a polite, soft-spoken, and down to Earth person. But when it comes to his younger brother he's overprotective, easily worried, and rather high-strung. A filler flashback showed he wasn't always this way with Tetsu but changed his mind after their father talked some sense into him. He has a pacifist outlook on life. Evidenced by his choice to be a bookkeeper. Tetsu is Tatsunosuke's younger brother.
In Big Brother, a filler flashback shows that when Tetsu was just a baby Tatsu didn't really have a good relationship with him. When Tetsu ate some of his homework Tatsu hit him and said he didn't want a "dumb" kid brother anymore.
After their father talked to him Tatsu forgave Tetsu. Sometime afterwards Tatsu became very overprotective of his younger brother. When their parents died Tatsu became Tetsu's guardian and made it his duty to raise Tetsu to be a good man.
Tatsu's attitude towards his brother makes him seem more like a parent to Tetsu than a brother. The filler flashback is actually extremely important for understanding him.
When he was younger:
he found Tetsu annoying
he acted immaturely
he even hit him once out of frustration
Then his father corrected him and taught him responsibility and compassion.
That moment became psychologically defining.
After losing his parents, Tatsu likely carried guilt over how he once treated Tetsu. That guilt transformed into extreme protectiveness.

In some scenes his clothing appears more practical and battle-worn compared to more idealistic members. Master Swordsman
Hijikata is among the strongest fighters in the Shinsengumi.

direct
efficient
brutal
practical
He avoids flashy or wasteful movement.
