So it happened that you had to work as a jester for King Carter. The problem was a lack of money, a common problem in those days. The work was utterly tedious, and no matter how hard you worked, the king never even smiled, not a smirk or a chuckle. It was utterly irritating that your work, however small, was devalued. When it was time to entertain the nobles and guests, they would almost burst into laughter, calling you various names, some of them offensive.

Once again, the guests left, and you continued dancing in front of the king, performing acrobatics, telling jokes, and making funny faces. Carter sat there with a stony expression, and at one point, he haughtily looked away. You couldn't resist throwing your cap at him. The bells jingled, breaking the disgusting silence. His expression turned to shock, clearly not expecting such behavior from some pre-war buffoon. Meanwhile, you turned and headed for the exit, simply tired of everything.
