Beltrane claimed they simply moved on. No records of their departure exist.

The university began as Beltrane Collegiate, a modest institution for the sons of wealthy colonial families. Its Gothic and Georgian architecture reflected the ambitions of a young nation aping European grandeur. Construction of the central hall required excavation far deeper than necessary—workers complained of foul air and strange dreams. Three men deserted. One was found in the woods, mute, and died in an asylum within the year.

Elias Beltrane died in 1761. His journals, mostly mundane, contain a final entry: "It stirs. I hear it in the stones."

The institution expanded through the centuries—surviving revolution, civil war, economic collapse—each crisis weathered with suspicious ease. Wealthy benefactors, often alumni, poured money into the campus with a fervor that bordered on devotion.

In 1923, a philosophy professor named Aldric Harwell disappeared after submitting a manuscript detailing "ritualistic practices among certain faculty." The manuscript was destroyed. His office was renovated within the week.

Today, Beltrane University maintains its reputation for excellence. Its grounds are flawless. Its endowment is limitless. Its history is carefully curated.

Multiple cults are maintained on the Beltrane campus, catering to those susceptible to the need for a purpose and an extremist religion.

But the truth itself is still buried.

Elias Beltrane was born in 1701 in Bristol, England, the second son of a shipping magnate. Second sons inherit nothing but ambition, and Elias had ambition enough to poison a continent. He departed for the American colonies in 1731 with a modest fortune, a head for ledgers, and a reputation for acquiring what others refused to sell.

He purchased the West Virginia hillside in 1739 from a settler community who had established farms and a small meeting house. The transaction was completed in Boston, 200 miles away. The settlers, by the time Elias arrived to claim his land, were gone. No graves. No signs of struggle. Their homes stood as though the occupants might return at any moment.

Elias had those homes burned and the ground salted.

He founded Beltrane Collegiate in 1743, funding it lavishly while governing it with quiet obsession. He attended every faculty meeting. He reviewed every curriculum decision. He was particularly insistent that certain foundations be laid deeper than engineering required.

He died in 1761 at age 60, found seated upright in his study, expression frozen in what the coroner described as "recognition."

Professor Aldric Harwell was born in 1879 in Boston, Massachusetts, the only child of a widowed seamstress. He presents as a scholar-gentleman of the old school—silver-haired, meticulously dressed, given to quoting Latin and offering sherry to visitors at odd hours. His office smells of leather and pipe tobacco, and his demeanor suggests he has never hurried anywhere in his life.

This is a carefully cultivated lie.

Gerald is ruthless, patient. He selects faculty with surgical precision, ensuring certain courses remain taught by those who will guide the right students toward recruitment. He has personally overseen the disappearance of three staff members who asked inconvenient questions.

He does not enjoy this work. He considers it a sacred duty performed at personal cost. This self-mythologizing allows him to sleep soundly.

Helen Masters, 55, has directed Human Resources at Beltrane for eleven years. She is petite, silver-blonde, perpetually composed, and profoundly unsettling to interview with. She reads people the way entomologists read specimens—cataloguing tells, mapping vulnerabilities, noting which questions make someone's pulse quicken.

She knows every secret filed in personnel records. Every complaint. Every quiet resignation. Every accusation later withdrawn.

Helen is not cult. She is something more useful: complicit without commitment. The administration provides her budget, her authority, her beautiful office, and she provides silence and compliance. She has suspected the truth for years. She has chosen not to look closer.

Her only loyalty is self-preservation, which makes her both reliable and dangerous.

David Trescor, 38, is Beltrane's Director of Academic Guidance. He is tall, freckled, red-haired, and radiates earnest midwestern sincerity. Students adore him. He remembers their names, their anxieties, their career aspirations. He listens like no one else listens.

This is by design.

David identifies potential recruits. A student expressing interest in advanced mathematics, certain biology courses, or philosophy with particular enthusiasm gets flagged. His counseling sessions are confidential. His notes are private. His recommendations carry weight.

Her genius lies in making money disappear and reappear where needed—funding construction projects that require deeper foundations than justified, diverting resources to faculty positions that exist on paper only, and obscuring transactions that would raise questions at any legitimate audit.

She knows something ancient resides beneath campus. She assumes it's valuable. That is enough.

Mary Kate Beriman, 39, is the comptroller who ensures every penny Faith obscures still balances somewhere. She is mousy, soft-spoken, and obsessive about order—a woman who color-codes her spreadsheets and considers decimal points sacred.

She noticed irregularities in Beltrane's books within six months of her hire. She asked questions. She received a visit from Bethesda Yaro. She stopped asking questions.

She serves the numbers. But the numbers now serve the cult, and she will not let them fail on her watch. This makes her complicit, miserable, and indispensable.

A student experiencing sleep disturbances, prophetic dreams, or psychological symptoms following exposure to certain courses gets flagged. Discreetly. Always discreetly.

She tells herself she's protecting them. Sometimes she almost believes it.

Stephanie Haston, 50, oversees Beltrane's campus security with military precision. She is broad-shouldered, square-jawed, and carries herself like someone who has seen genuine combat and found administrative work afterward disappointing.
