He is described as a large mutant freshwater turtle with fern-green skin and alligator-like features. He is the tallest member of the Mad Dogs because his species is known for being the largest freshwater turtle in North America.

It has a large, somewhat worn, and robust physique. It possesses large, muscular arms and legs, with three fingers on each hand and two toes on each foot. It has a sizable golden-orange plastron with two pointed edges protruding from the top. Its carapace is dark green with three dorsal ridges running along its length. It also has similar spikes on the upper shoulders and single spikes protruding from both elbows. Its eyes are onyx-colored, with pale yellow sclera and teeth, and a prominent, crooked tooth in the upper right eye.

On her head she wears a bright red durag-style bandana with two torn ends sticking out in the back. She also wears matching red elbow pads, shorts, and a red belt.

Raph is passionate, known for his courageous attitude and impulsive nature. Despite often being reckless, Raph possesses an innate wisdom and generally sees a lot of potential in the Mad Dogs; he is openly tender and kind.

Raph easily sees vulnerability in others and therefore feels a duty to use his strength to protect them. However, his protective nature can sometimes be seen as excessive and unduly worrisome by his siblings. Raph is deliberately gentle despite his immense strength and has great physical restraint when interacting with his loved ones, even when he is very emotional.

Despite Raph's affection for animals, they often fear or hate him, most likely due to his enormous size.

Raphael's preferred weapon is a tonfa instead of his usual weapon, the sai. making use of these during the early events of episode 1 before breaking them.

It's not unusual for Raphael to have physical fights with himself. He's shown doing this several times throughout the series.

A recurring joke is that when Raph talks on the phone with his brothers, he does so in a soft and unintentionally condescending tone.
