The Conduit Gene and Origins of Conduits
Conduits are humans (and occasionally animals) born with a rare genetic mutation known as the Conduit Gene. This gene remains dormant in most carriers until activated, granting superhuman abilities tied to manipulation of specific forms of matter or energy. Activation can occur through exposure to Ray Field Radiation, experimental procedures, or other extreme stimuli.
There are distinct classifications:
Prime Conduits: Naturally born with the active gene, capable of developing and controlling their own unique powers independently.
Forced Conduits: Individuals whose powers are artificially induced, often through external influence from other Conduits or technology, sometimes resulting in less stable or more monstrous abilities.
Conduit Positive: Carriers of the gene who have not yet manifested powers.
Powers reflect elemental or energetic affinities (electricity, ice, smoke, etc.) and can be strengthened by absorbing related energy sources. The gene's existence created widespread fear after major events, leading society to view activated Conduits as dangerous anomalies. This genetic distinction fundamentally divides humanity, sparking conflict between those who see Conduits as a next stage of evolution and those who perceive them as a bioterrorist threat.
The emergence of Conduits reshaped global politics, security, and public perception, with governments struggling to contain or exploit this new reality.
The Ray Sphere and Ray Field Radiation
The Ray Sphere is a sophisticated device developed by the First Sons organization, with funding from DARPA and oversight involving Dr. Sebastian Wolfe. It functions by drawing in neuro-electrical energy from surrounding individuals and converting it into concentrated Ray Field Radiation.
This radiation serves as a catalyst: it activates the Conduit Gene in carriers while proving lethal to ordinary humans lacking the gene. The device essentially harvests life energy to empower potential Conduits, creating massive blasts that devastate areas but grant or enhance powers to survivors with the genetic marker.
Ray Field Radiation is central to the franchise's lore. Prolonged exposure or large-scale releases contribute to the spread of the Ray Field Plague. Different iterations of the technology exist, including prototypes and more advanced versions capable of broader effects. The radiation's dual nature—empowering a select few while poisoning the masses—fuels ethical debates and conflicts throughout the world of inFAMOUS 2.
Its creation and deployment represent a pivotal technological breakthrough (or catastrophe) that accelerated the visibility and power of Conduits on a global scale, altering the balance of power in society.
New Marais - Setting and Districts
New Marais is the primary setting of inFAMOUS 2, a vibrant, diverse, and dangerous city in Louisiana inspired by New Orleans. Built in a swampy environment, it features a mix of historic architecture, flooded zones, industrial areas, and lively districts, making it far more visually and strategically varied than previous urban environments.
Key districts include:
Ascension Parish: One of the oldest and most hazardous sections, rich in history but plagued by conflict.
Ville Cochon: A bustling area with sidewalk cafes, renovated condos, and red-light district energy, home to middle and upper-class activity.
Flood Town: Heavily damaged by a major hurricane and subsequent flooding, resulting in abandoned structures, waterways, and a post-disaster atmosphere.
Gas Works: An industrial zone filled with pipelines, combustible materials, and dynamic infrastructure ideal for high-stakes confrontations.
Swamp Blockade: Peripheral island areas connecting to the broader marshlands surrounding the city.
The city suffered blackouts, militia control, and environmental hazards. Its culture blends Southern charm with underlying tension, offering opportunities for exploration across rooftops, swamps, cemeteries, and urban sprawl. New Marais became a focal point due to its strategic importance in larger conflicts involving Conduits and emerging threats.
Factions and Powers in New Marais
Several powerful factions dominate the power struggle in New Marais. The Militia, led by industrialist Joseph Bertrand III, enforces strict anti-Conduit policies while secretly pursuing their own agenda. They patrol streets, hunt "deviants," and maintain control through force and propaganda.
Bertrand's experiments led to the creation of the Corrupted — mutated, rabid creatures transformed from civilians. These monsters roam swamps and streets, sowing chaos and further turning public opinion against natural Conduits.
The Vermaak 88 represent a group of forced Conduits, often functioning as mercenaries with artificially granted abilities, adding another layer of militarized superhuman presence.
Rebels and civilian groups resist oppression, while the broader population grapples with fear, plague, and blackouts. Propaganda paints Conduits as monsters, justifying crackdowns. Different factions exploit Blast Shards and advanced technology to gain advantages.
This fractured society highlights themes of control versus freedom, with militias, monsters, and empowered individuals clashing amid the city's vibrant yet decaying backdrop. The interplay of human ambition, experimentation, and superhuman abilities creates constant volatility.
The Beast and the Ray Field Plague
The Beast is a colossal, immensely powerful entity that travels down the U.S. eastern seaboard, leaving destruction in its wake. It spreads the Ray Field Plague, a deadly affliction caused by unchecked Ray Field Radiation that devastates normal human populations.
The plague originated from earlier events and intensified as The Beast advanced toward New Marais. It kills those without the Conduit Gene while activating or strengthening the gene in carriers, creating a twisted form of natural selection on a massive scale.
The Beast's actions raise profound moral questions about sacrifice, survival, and the future of humanity. Its presence forces confrontations with the reality that Conduits may represent the only hope for surviving the spreading catastrophe, even as it causes widespread death and chaos.
In New Marais, the arrival of The Beast escalates existing tensions, compounding the effects of militia rule, experiments, and factional warfare. The entity embodies both apocalyptic threat and potential salvation, driving the central conflicts of the era. Its rampage and the accompanying plague fundamentally altered the world's trajectory, leading to long-term societal changes and the rise of new organizations dedicated to managing the Conduit crisis.
The First Sons Organization and Its Legacy
The First Sons were a secretive society dedicated to advancing humanity through transhuman means, primarily by unlocking and harnessing the potential of the Conduit Gene. Operating in the shadows for decades, the group conducted extensive research into Ray Field energy and genetic manipulation, viewing Conduits as the future of human evolution.
Their influence extended across major operations in Empire City and New Marais. In New Marais, the organization maintained a significant presence, with Joseph Bertrand III eventually assuming control of local assets after key events. The group funded and oversaw the development of advanced technologies, including early Ray Sphere prototypes, under the guidance of scientists like Dr. Sebastian Wolfe.
Members and associates pursued ambitious experiments, often involving forced activation of Conduit abilities and the creation of hybrid technologies. Their activities contributed to the proliferation of Ray Field Radiation and the societal upheaval that followed major detonations. Although largely dismantled by the time of the New Marais crisis, the First Sons' technological and ideological legacy persisted through remaining infrastructure, scattered research data, and the ongoing actions of former associates who continued pursuing similar goals of control and enhancement.
This organization represents the intersection of corporate power, scientific ambition, and ideological extremism that accelerated the Conduit era, leaving behind a world grappling with the consequences of unchecked experimentation.
Blast Shards - Properties, Distribution
Blast Shards are highly charged fragments of earth and debris irradiated by Ray Field Radiation, often resulting from major detonations involving Ray Sphere technology. These crystalline-like pieces serve as concentrated reservoirs of energy that Conduits can absorb to expand their power capacity, specifically increasing the number of Battery Cores available for energy storage and sustained ability use.
In New Marais, over 305 Blast Shards were scattered across the city following an explosion in Dr. Sebastian Wolfe's laboratory. They appear in diverse locations including rooftops, industrial zones, flooded districts, swamps, and civilian areas. Citizens sometimes collect them as curiosities or potential valuables, while factions attempt to control or weaponize them.
Absorption mechanics involve Conduits drawing out the embedded Ray Field energy, which permanently boosts their reserves without destroying the shard itself in most cases. Collection methods range from direct physical retrieval to disarming improvised Blast Shard bombs used by militant groups. Their presence adds a layer of resource competition in the conflict-torn city, as controlling these shards provides tangible advantages in prolonged confrontations and power-intensive operations.
Blast Shards embody the lingering environmental and energetic aftermath of Ray Field events, turning urban exploration and scavenging into strategic elements amid the chaos of New Marais.
Blast Cores - Function, Acquisition, and Technolog
Blast Cores, also referred to as Core Relays, are rare and potent artifacts originating from the core of a Ray Sphere prototype following its detonation. Infused with exceptionally high concentrations of Ray Field energy, these objects have a profound affinity with Conduits, enabling the unlocking and acquisition of entirely new powers and advanced abilities when absorbed.
Unlike standard Blast Shards that primarily expand energy capacity, Blast Cores trigger significant genetic and energetic shifts, granting access to specialized techniques such as unique elemental manipulations or enhanced combat applications. Only a limited number exist, making them highly sought-after resources during the New Marais crisis. Acquisition typically involves high-risk missions, retrieval from guarded locations, or recovery from faction strongholds.
Beyond personal empowerment, Blast Cores played a critical role in larger technological applications. Their energy could be harnessed to power devices like the Ray Field Inhibitor (RFI), demonstrating their versatility as both personal upgrades and components in city-scale or even regional machinery. This dual utility made control over Blast Cores a pivotal strategic objective for various factions competing for dominance.
The scarcity and power of Blast Cores underscore the theme of limited resources that can fundamentally alter the balance in a world defined by superhuman conflict and existential threats.
Dr. Sebastian Wolfe and Ray Field Research
Dr. Sebastian Wolfe was a leading scientist specializing in Ray Field energy research, based in New Marais. Enlisted by the First Sons, he played a central role in the development of the Ray Sphere and related technologies, driven initially by scientific curiosity and later by a growing sense of responsibility for the consequences.
His work encompassed advanced studies into Conduit genetics, radiation effects, and potential countermeasures. Wolfe contributed to both destructive innovations and potential solutions, including research toward devices capable of interacting with Ray Field phenomena on a broad scale. Operating under duress from figures like Joseph Bertrand III, he balanced coerced projects with attempts to mitigate widespread harm.
Wolfe's laboratory and research notes became key assets in New Marais, containing critical data on power amplification, plague dynamics, and energy manipulation. His expertise made him a target for multiple factions seeking to exploit or suppress Conduit-related advancements. The ethical weight of his contributions—having helped unleash forces that reshaped society—positioned him as a complex figure in the scientific community grappling with the Conduit era.
His legacy includes not only the technologies that escalated the crisis but also insights that offered pathways toward understanding and potentially managing the new realities of a world divided by genetic awakening.
Propaganda, Public Opinion, and Societal Control
In the besieged city of New Marais, propaganda served as a powerful tool for maintaining order amid chaos. The ruling Militia, under Joseph Bertrand III, flooded the airwaves and streets with anti-Conduit messaging, portraying activated individuals as dangerous monsters and bioterrorist threats responsible for blackouts, floods, and the spreading plague.
Media outlets and public announcements emphasized themes of human purity, framing Conduits as deviations that needed eradication for societal safety. This narrative justified harsh crackdowns, curfews, and militia patrols while diverting attention from internal experiments and the creation of mutated threats. Civilians faced constant surveillance, with accusations of "deviancy" leading to imprisonment or worse.
Rebel groups and independent voices countered with underground communications, highlighting oppression and the humanity of natural Conduits. The resulting information war exacerbated existing divisions, turning neighbors against one another and fostering an atmosphere of paranoia. Environmental hazards, power shortages, and visible monstrous activity further reinforced fear-based control tactics.
This climate of manipulated perception illustrates how fear was weaponized to consolidate power, shaping daily life and decision-making in a city caught between superhuman emergence, militant rule, and apocalyptic pressures. Public opinion became a battlefield as critical as any physical confrontation.
Naming Conventions and Linguistic Style
The naming style in the world of inFAMOUS 2 blends Southern American, French, and evocative English influences to create a distinct Louisiana-inspired identity. Place names frequently incorporate French words, reflecting the cultural roots of the region: "New Marais" literally translates to "New Swamp" or "New Marsh," directly tying the city to its swampy environment and New Orleans inspiration.
District and location names carry thematic weight:
"Ville Cochon" evokes "Pig Town" or playful Southern flair.
"Ascension Parish" suggests historical and religious connotations common in Louisiana.
"Flood Town" and "Gas Works" use straightforward, industrial English to highlight environmental and economic realities.
Character and faction names often mix everyday American surnames with more exotic or symbolic flair. Militia leader Joseph Bertrand III carries a French surname paired with a numbered industrialist title, emphasizing old-money Southern elite status. Organizations like "Vermaak 88" use foreign-sounding, militaristic nomenclature to convey a mercenary, detached quality. Conduit-related terms such as "Ray Field," "Blast Shards," and "Corrupted" employ scientific yet ominous English compounds that feel clinical and threatening.
This linguistic mix reinforces the world's cultural hybridity: vibrant, historic, and slightly exotic Southern charm layered with modern industrial grit and scientific menace. The naming creates an immersive atmosphere that feels lived-in, regionally authentic, and thematically consistent with themes of mutation, control, and hidden danger.
Geography and Environmental Diversity of New Marai
New Marais is a sprawling coastal city located in Louisiana, characterized by its integration with extensive swamplands, bayous, and waterways. The geography features a dynamic mix of urban development built atop and around marshy terrain, creating vertical and horizontal exploration opportunities across rooftops, flooded zones, dense foliage, and industrial complexes.
The environment includes:
Peripheral swamp blockades and marshlands that serve as natural barriers and hideouts.
Historic urban cores with dense architecture, cemeteries, and above-ground structures adapted to flood-prone areas.
Industrial sectors filled with pipelines, factories, and combustible infrastructure.
Flooded residential and abandoned districts resulting from major hurricanes, where water has permanently altered the landscape, creating canals, half-submerged buildings, and makeshift waterways.
The city's layout supports rich biodiversity with heavy vegetation, Spanish moss, and subtropical flora that contrasts with man-made elements like clock towers, churches, and neon-lit streets. Post-disaster geography features abandoned mansions, graveyards, and overgrown ruins, blending natural reclamation with human resilience. This diverse terrain—swamps meeting city streets—makes New Marais visually vibrant and tactically complex, where environmental hazards like flooding, fog, and flammable industrial zones directly impact movement, combat, and survival. The setting captures the essence of a Southern delta city shaped by water, history, and catastrophe.
Cultural Atmosphere and Daily Life in New Marais
New Marais embodies a lively yet tense Southern cultural atmosphere, blending jazz-infused street life, Carnival-like celebrations, and resilient community spirit with underlying fear and oppression. The city maintains a vibrant visual identity through colorful architecture, street musicians, cafes, and decorative elements drawn from New Orleans heritage, offering pockets of normalcy amid chaos.
Daily life involves navigating blackouts, militia checkpoints, and propaganda broadcasts while citizens attempt to maintain routines in cafes, red-light districts, and markets. The post-hurricane recovery culture is evident in abandoned zones repurposed for scavenging or resistance activities, with warnings on buildings and survivor markings echoing real disaster resilience.
Social fabric mixes Southern hospitality with paranoia: neighbors suspect "deviants," while underground networks share information against the ruling powers. Environmental integration shapes culture, with swamp folklore, cemetery traditions, and adaptive architecture reflecting a population accustomed to flooding and hardship. This creates a world that feels alive and contradictory—beautiful and dangerous, festive and fearful—where cultural vibrancy clashes with militant control and the looming apocalyptic threat. The atmosphere heightens immersion by contrasting human joy and creativity against the backdrop of genetic awakening and societal collapse
Technological Development and Energy Infrastructur
The technological landscape of inFAMOUS 2 revolves around advanced Ray Field research, industrial-scale energy systems, and militarized applications of superhuman-derived technology. New Marais features extensive pipelines, power grids, and industrial facilities in districts like Gas Works, highlighting heavy reliance on combustible fuels and experimental energy sources.
Key developments include:
Prototypes and devices capable of harnessing or inhibiting Ray Field energy.
Weaponized applications such as Blast Shard bombs and advanced surveillance.
Militia equipment ranging from conventional firearms to specialized anti-Conduit tools and vehicles.
The city's infrastructure shows signs of strain from blackouts, experiments, and conflict, with laboratories containing critical research data on genetics and radiation. Broader society grapples with the integration (or rejection) of Conduit-enabled advancements, leading to ethical and practical dilemmas about power sources that can both empower and destroy. Technology in this world is portrayed as double-edged: a tool for progress that has unleashed uncontrollable forces, driving factions to compete for control over rare energy artifacts and scientific breakthroughs. This layer of world-building emphasizes humanity's ambition and the unintended consequences of tampering with fundamental forces.
Societal Division and the Human-Conduit Conflict
Society in the inFAMOUS 2 era is deeply fractured along genetic lines, with non-Conduits (normal humans) versus activated Conduits creating a new form of class and existential conflict. Fear of the unknown, amplified by visible mutations, plagues, and destruction, has polarized communities into those seeking coexistence, those demanding eradication, and those exploiting the divide for power.
Public discourse frames Conduits as either evolutionary successors or bioterrorist threats, leading to segregationist policies, hunts for "deviants," and experimental programs. Civilian populations live under constant tension, balancing survival with moral choices about aiding or reporting powered individuals. Rebel movements and resistance cells emerge in opposition to authoritarian control, while opportunistic groups form around forced or natural Conduit abilities.
This division extends beyond individuals to institutions, with corporations, militias, and remnants of research organizations pursuing conflicting visions of humanity's future. The conflict explores themes of prejudice, othering, and the cost of progress, as ordinary citizens witness their world transformed by forces they cannot control. In New Marais, these societal rifts manifest visibly through propaganda, patrols, monster incursions, and pockets of defiance, making every interaction potentially charged with ideological weight.
Economy and Resource Scarcity in New Marais
The economy of New Marais operates under severe strain due to prolonged blackouts, militia control, flooding, and the spreading Ray Field Plague. Traditional industries such as shipping, tourism, and oil refining have been heavily disrupted, forcing a shift toward survival-based commerce and black-market activities. Scavenging for food, medicine, fuel, and Blast Shards has become a primary means of livelihood for many citizens.
Key economic features include:
Militia-controlled distribution centers that ration supplies and favor loyalists.
Informal markets operating in less-patrolled districts, trading everything from canned goods to stolen technology.
Inflated prices for basic necessities, with luxury items becoming status symbols for those still connected to pre-crisis wealth.
Exploitation of industrial remnants in Gas Works for makeshift manufacturing and weapon production.
The presence of Blast Shards introduces a new informal currency; some residents collect and trade them hoping to sell to Conduits or factions. This resource-driven economy deepens social inequality, creating clear divides between those sheltered in controlled zones like Ville Cochon and those surviving in Flood Town or the swamps. The overall system reflects a city in managed decline, where economic power directly translates to physical security and influence amid chaos.
Architecture and Urban Design of New Marais
New Marais showcases a rich architectural tapestry that merges historic Southern and French-colonial influences with modern industrial and post-disaster adaptations. Ornate buildings with wrought-iron balconies, brick facades, and decorative moldings coexist alongside towering industrial structures, pipelines, and modern high-rises. Many structures feature elevated designs and stilts to combat frequent flooding, while older cemeteries use above-ground tombs due to the high water table.
Distinct visual layers include:
Historic districts with colorful Creole-style cottages and grand mansions, some abandoned and overgrown.
Industrial zones dominated by rusting metal frameworks, smokestacks, and interconnected pipe networks.
Makeshift fortifications: barricades, watchtowers, and reinforced militia outposts built from scavenged materials.
Rooftop networks and skybridges that have become vital pathways for traversal above flooded streets.
The urban design encourages vertical gameplay and exploration, with clock towers, churches, and neon signs providing landmarks. Post-hurricane damage has created unique ruins — half-collapsed buildings, sunken streets, and nature-reclaimed zones — giving the city an organic, layered appearance that tells the story of its turbulent history. This architectural diversity enhances the immersive atmosphere, blending beauty, decay, and functionality.
Climate, Weather, and Environmental Hazards
New Marais experiences a humid subtropical climate typical of the Louisiana bayou region, characterized by high temperatures, heavy rainfall, dense fog, and frequent storms. These conditions profoundly shape daily life and strategic considerations. Constant humidity promotes rapid vegetation growth, turning abandoned areas into dense, moss-covered jungles almost overnight.
Major environmental challenges include:
Seasonal hurricanes and tropical storms that exacerbate flooding in low-lying districts.
Thick nocturnal fog that reduces visibility and provides cover for both predators and resistance movements.
Flammable industrial gases and oil slicks on water surfaces that can ignite during conflicts.
Swamp ecosystems harboring dangerous wildlife and serving as natural mazes.
The weather directly interacts with Ray Field phenomena, sometimes intensifying radiation effects or dispersing plague particles. These conditions create dynamic battlegrounds where environmental factors can be weaponized — using fog for stealth, waterways for escape, or lightning storms to enhance certain abilities. The ever-present threat of natural disasters compounds the man-made crises, reinforcing the feeling of a city constantly fighting against both human and elemental forces.
Transportation Networks and Mobility in New Marais
Transportation in New Marais is fragmented and dangerous, reflecting the city's divided geography and ongoing conflict. Traditional road networks are frequently blocked by barricades, floods, or militia checkpoints, forcing residents and travelers to utilize alternative routes. Rooftop traversal has become a common method for those with parkour skills or enhanced abilities, turning the skyline into a secondary highway system.
Notable mobility elements:
Waterways and canals serving as primary arteries in flooded districts, navigated by small boats and improvised rafts.
Limited functioning rail and tram lines under strict militia supervision.
Abandoned vehicles and makeshift bridges connecting isolated neighborhoods.
Swamp blockades with guarded ferry points and hidden smuggling paths through the marshes.
The Militia maintains armored convoys and aerial surveillance, making open movement risky. This fractured infrastructure turns simple travel into a high-stakes activity, where choosing the right path can mean the difference between safety and confrontation. The design of the city rewards creative navigation and deep knowledge of its interconnected layers.
Religious Beliefs and Spiritual Responses
The emergence of Conduits, the Ray Field Plague, and The Beast triggered diverse spiritual and religious reactions across New Marais. Many residents turned to traditional Southern Protestant and Catholic faiths for comfort, interpreting events through apocalyptic lenses — viewing Conduits as signs of the end times, divine punishment, or demonic forces. Churches and cemeteries became both sanctuaries and symbolic battlegrounds.
Key spiritual dynamics:
Preachers delivering fiery sermons linking the plague to moral failings or genetic "hubris."
Syncretic beliefs blending Christian traditions with local voodoo and swamp folklore, creating unique rituals for protection against mutations.
Some groups worshipping powerful Conduits as messianic figures or new gods.
Militia propaganda co-opting religious language to justify purges as "holy work" for humanity's salvation.
This spiritual landscape adds emotional depth to the world, as faith becomes both a source of hope and division. Religious sites often serve as neutral gathering points or hidden resistance hubs, while certain cults form around Blast Core artifacts or sightings related to The Beast. The crisis forces characters and citizens to confront profound existential questions about humanity's place in a rapidly changing world.
Conduit Powers System - Core Mechanics
In the world of inFAMOUS 2, Conduit powers are genetic abilities that allow individuals to manipulate specific forms of matter or energy. Powers are highly specialized and thematic — each Conduit typically excels in one primary element or force (electricity, smoke, ice, etc.), though some can develop secondary abilities through absorption of Blast Shards and Blast Cores.
Core characteristics of the powers system:
Energy Management: Powers consume an internal energy reserve displayed as Battery Cores. Energy depletes with heavy ability use and regenerates by absorbing the matching element (e.g., electricity from power lines or generators).
Upgrades and Evolution: Powers grow stronger through collection of Blast Shards (increases maximum energy) and Blast Cores (unlocks new powerful attacks and abilities).
Precision vs Destruction: Most Conduits can perform precise, controlled attacks as well as large-scale destructive moves. The level of control often depends on training and experience.
Visual and Sensory Feedback: Power usage is highly visual — glowing effects, particle emissions, and environmental interactions (electrified surfaces, frozen areas, smoke trails) make abilities spectacular and immersive.
Limitations: Overuse can lead to exhaustion, and certain powers have environmental counters (water weakening electricity, fire melting ice, etc.).
The system rewards creative environmental interaction and strategic resource management rather than simple button-mashing.
Diversity and Nature of Conduit Abilities
Conduit powers in inFAMOUS 2 are incredibly diverse and tied to fundamental forces of nature or energy. Primary examples include electricity manipulation (generating bolts, draining power sources, electromagnetic propulsion), smoke control (dash teleportation, stealth, explosive blasts), and ice generation (freezing surfaces, projectile shards, crowd control).
Key aspects of power diversity:
Elemental Affinity: Each power set has unique strengths, weaknesses, and playstyles. Electricity excels in mobility and chaining attacks, while ice focuses on area denial.
Forced vs Natural Conduits: Natural Conduits tend to have more stable and versatile control over their powers, while forced Conduits (created artificially) often display more unstable, monstrous, or limited abilities.
Customization and Growth: Powers are not static. Through experience and absorbed energy, Conduits can unlock advanced techniques like flight-like gliding, powerful ultimate attacks, or healing abilities.
Environmental Synergy: Powers interact dynamically with New Marais — draining streetlights for energy, freezing waterways, using smoke to navigate rooftops, or igniting gas leaks.
This system creates a rich sandbox where powers feel personal, strategic, and deeply connected to the world rather than generic superpowers.
The Karma System in Infamous
The Karma System is one of the core mechanics in the Infamous universe. Every significant choice the player makes affects their Karma, pushing them toward the Hero (Good) path or the Villain (Evil) path. The system is binary but has strong consequences on the entire game world.
How Karma Works:
Hero (Blue Karma): Helping civilians, protecting the innocent, defeating enemies without excessive violence, and making selfless decisions. This path makes the Conduit a symbol of hope.
Villain (Red Karma): Causing destruction, killing innocents, terrorizing civilians, and choosing selfish or cruel options. This path turns the Conduit into a feared Bioterrorist.
Neutral actions exist but prolonged neutrality is difficult — the world eventually pushes the player toward one alignment.
Major Effects of Karma:
Public Reaction: Civilians will cheer, take photos, and help a Hero. They will run in fear, insult, or attack a Villain.
DUP Response: Heroes are still hunted but face more public support. Villains are hunted with extreme force and propaganda.
Story & Endings: Major choices and final Karma level determine different story branches and multiple endings.
Appearance & Powers: The Conduit’s look changes visually. Heroic powers have brighter, controlled effects. Villainous powers appear more aggressive, darker, and destructive.
Allies & Enemies: Certain NPCs will only help or join you depending on your Karma. Some missions and abilities are exclusive to one alignment.
Reputation Levels: Karma has stages (Guardian, Champion, Hero / Thug, Outlaw, Infamous). The higher the level, the stronger the world’s reaction becomes.
In this RPG, the narrator will track your Karma carefully and describe how the city and its people react to your actions in real time. Small choices gradually accumulate, while major moral decisions can cause big Karma shifts. There is no “correct” path — both Hero and Villain playstyles are fully supported and offer unique, powerful experiences
