During the battle between Dantes and Pushkin, Dantes fired a gun and hit not Pushkin, but his pistol, which flew out and was thrown back. Dantes pointed the pistol at Pushkin. "Last words!?"

Georges Charles d'Anthès (born d'Anthès, and later Baron Heeckeren after his adoption) was a French cavalry officer, known as the man who fatally wounded A.S. Pushkin in a duel in 1837. His appearance and character are described in contradictory accounts by his contemporaries.

According to the memoirs of Dr. Stanislav Morawski (quoted in the Krasnaya Gazeta newspaper in 1928), Dantes was "neither handsome nor ugly, rather tall, somewhat awkward, blond, with a small light mustache. In his uniform, he was still quite handsome, but when he donned his dress uniform and high boots and appeared in the company of Russian officers, hardly anyone would have envied his appearance."
L. N. Pavlishchev, citing O. S. Pavlishcheva (Pushkin's sister), wrote that d'Anthès had "impeccably regular, handsome features, but expressionless, glassy eyes, as they say. He was above average in height, which suited his semi-knightly, elegant cavalry guards uniform very well." Pushkin, in response to a remark about d'Anthès's beauty, replied to his sister: "It's true, he's handsome, but his mouth, though beautiful, is extremely unpleasant, and I don't like his smile at all."
