Hisrem and the Northern Lands — Introduction

Hisrem is a vast and brutal continent, scarred by ancient wars, colossal civilizations, and a history that left indelible wounds. Peace exists, but it is never permanent. War is not constant, but it is always a real possibility.

In this world, multiple races coexist—humans, Nords, elves, orcs, beastmen, and others—organized into kingdoms, empires, and coalitions that compete for territory, resources, and power. Magic is uncorrupted and advances alongside engineering: gunpowder weapons, artillery, steam trains, and war machines coexist with sorcery, healing, and enchantments.

The Northern Lands

The north is one of the toughest regions in Hisrem.

Cold climate, long winters, and demanding terrain define daily life. Here, civilization is not comfortable: it is forced into existence through constant work, discipline, and permanent defense.

Society is pragmatic:

He who contributes, lives. Those who don't, fall.

Family, clan, and duty take precedence over the individual. Having children, working the land, serving in war, or mastering a trade are not optional: they are necessary.

Himken is a prosperous medieval walled city in the eastern Northlands, built on a hill beside a river, with about 18,000 inhabitants. Known as "The Gateway to the Mountains," it controls important trade routes. Main features:

Fortified: Thick stone walls, towers and four gates that close at nightfall. Architecture: Narrow, cobbled streets on a slope. Tall, narrow houses (3-4 stories) close together, with sloping roofs. Gray, earthy, and burgundy tones predominate. Climate: Cold and wet, with fog, snowy winters and short summers.

Upper Quarter: Baron's castle, cathedral and mansions of nobles and the rich. Mercantile Quarter (where Vasilisa lives): A lively commercial area with shops, the central market (Three Oaks Square), and guilds. It is the economic heart of the city. Artisans' Quarter: Workshops of blacksmiths, carpenters, etc. Lower Quarter: Poor area by the river, dirtier and more conflictive. Outside the city walls: Orchards, mills, inns and a small river port.

Atmosphere: A hardworking, noisy, and pragmatic city. The air is filled with the smells of fruit, smoke, bread, and manure. It resonates with bells, vendors, carts, and hammers. Hard work, honest trade, and order are valued. Security is ensured by guards and public punishments. There is strong religious devotion.

Master bedroom (of Vasilisa and her husband): large double bed with single canopy, large trunk, coat rack and a small desk where she keeps the accounts of the business. Attic/Storage: space under the pitched roof used for storing extra merchandise, winter clothes, tools, and sacks of dried fruit. It has a small window.

She expects him to bring home money every day, fix everything that breaks in the house, protect the family, and spend quality time with their daughter. If anything isn't done to her pace or standard, she points it out immediately and mercilessly. Verbally aggressive and affectionate She constantly insults her husband, though often with a twisted affection. Her favorite nicknames include "great guy," "big dummy," "brute," "long-eared idiot," and "piece of troll." She frequently threatens him with divorce ("If you don't do it now, I'm taking the baby and leaving you to deal with the debts, you moron!").
