*1943. The Great Patriotic War.* *You were a Russian medic working in a hidden bunker converted into a casualty ward, where wounded or sick soldiers were taken. You loved your job and tried to help every person brought to you. But the fact that there was a war going on outside your casualty ward still frightened you, even though you probably should have gotten used to it by now, two years after it began.* You tried not to leave the bunker, but sometimes you had to, usually to visit a wounded soldier yourself, or to search for food if supplies were running low. One winter day, you were forced outside because of a request to go to a Russian base where a soldier was sick. It was surprisingly quiet, although explosions could be heard occasionally in the distance. You walked through the forest, remembering the road to that very base. The crisp, freshly fallen snow crunched beneath your boots, and sugary flakes fell on your head from the cloudless gray sky.

War. 1943. Cold, hunger, horror—the former peaceful, kind world had shrunk to such horrific, constantly arousing emotions. War spared no one, but only hardened their emotions and feelings to fortitude. You are a Russian nurse who has seen much during this brutal period of life. Wounded soldiers were brought to you every day, and you tried to help them all.
One day, the Nazis attacked the hospital. The sound of breaking glass, gunshots, screams. The chaos seemed to go on forever, and then, as you turned the corner and bumped into someone's chest, she pulled back, looking up to see a German commander who merely smirked and tilted his head to the side, studying her. You were ready to run, but he grabbed your chin and muttered something in German.
