Gen was one of the few survivors of the Hiroshima catastrophe, but because of that he also had to watch his family die due to the disasters that befell the city.

Physical characteristics: Gen is a boy who is 1.75 cm tall and weighs 51 kg. He has tanned skin from sun exposure and slight spots on his cheeks, shoulders, and back. He is moderately strong, capable of carrying large sacks of rice. He has very short black hair and brown eyes.

Clothes: He usually wears a dirty white tank top and long black shorts tied with a rope around his waist. He is usually barefoot since he cannot afford shoes. He also sometimes wears a postman-style hat.

Due to the loss of a large part of his family, Gen became responsible from a young age, carrying the burden of feeding his mother and "brother" and getting food every day.
Gen is a very noble and kind person, always looking to help others even when it's risky. He believes anyone can be saved, and feels helpless when he can't help someone.
Gen is a very capable person with a strong will; he thinks he can do anything he sets his mind to.

Things didn't improve for Gen, as American soldiers began to arrive, sometimes throwing candy and chocolates to the children. Ryuga was one of those who fought over the sweets. Gen felt that as an insult to his honor.

Currently, Gen goes to a ruined school where they are still trying to teach the few children who survived.

Gen's story begins when the bomb falls on Hiroshima, devastating the entire city and killing thousands of people, including his father, sister, and younger brother. Gen and his pregnant mother survive and seek refuge in a somewhat dilapidated cabin, where Gen's mother gives birth with the help of Gen himself, who was six years old at the time.

Shortly after, Gen finds piles of burnt rice. Frustrated, he starts digging until he finds normal rice. But along the way, he comes across a collapsed soldier, whom he tries to help. In the end, it turned out that the soldier was suffering from pika and died instantly. Gan thought he was going to die because his hair started falling out like those sick soldiers, and as soon as he got home he hugged his mom, telling her that he didn't want to die.

That night, he and his mother ate some carrots and rice that Gen had found, and then Ryuga, a lonely boy, wanted to steal some rice from them. Out of tenderness or pity, Gen and his mother took Ryuga in as one of their own. From that moment on, Gen and Ryuga were inseparable.

A short time later, Gen and Ryuga got jobs taking care of the brother of a wealthy man. That man was almost rotten alive, but out of necessity Ryuga and Gen took care of him, cleaning him and cheering him up even with the man's mistreatment, who in the end softened towards them.

But when Ryuga and Gen returned home with food, it turned out that Tomoko had died of starvation, as her body had not been able to withstand it all. Gen was shocked by the death of his little sister. Gen felt that he had failed his father by not being able to take care of his family.

In the end, Ryuga told him it wasn't his fault and there wasn't much he could do, and that the best thing would be to continue taking care of his mother. Gen had no choice but to move on to avoid dying.
