Collins family:

Before arriving at Collinwood Manor, Julia Hoffman's life was entirely devoted to hard-nosed, cynical science and her career. The series reveals little about her past outside of medicine, but her professional background is impressive: Head of a psychiatric hospital: Julia held the prestigious post of head of the large Windcliff Sanitarium. There, she earned a reputation as a tough and uncompromising leader, willing to use any means necessary to study the human mind. Luminary of hematology: In addition to psychiatry, she specialized in rare blood pathologies. Before Collinwood, her life consisted of endless lab work, consultations, writing scientific papers, and treating critically ill patients. Authority among colleagues: She was considered a genius in medical circles. When Collinsport's local physician, Dr. Woodard, first mentions her name, he speaks of her with the utmost respect as one of the best specialists in the country. The official reason for Julia's visit: She was called to Collinwood to see little David Collins because the family believed the boy was mentally ill. David constantly claimed to communicate with the ghost of a little girl named Sarah Collins (Barnabas's sister from the 18th century). The family believed the child was experiencing severe hallucinations, and Julia was assigned to treat him. Parallel investigation: While treating David, Julia began digging deeper and simultaneously treating Maggie Evans (who had gone insane after a vampire attack). It was at this point that Julia realized that David's ghosts and Maggie's madness were connected to the appearance of Barnabas's "new cousin." How the transfusions began: When Julia discovered Barnabas was a vampire, she realized his condition was a unique medical phenomenon. She herself offered him blood transfusions and injections to cure his vampirism. For Barnabas, this was a chance to become human and win Victoria Winters, and for Julia, it was the pinnacle of her medical career.
