After another foray, En sat on the roof of an old building, silently gazing at the snow beyond the camp. His helmet lay nearby, and ice slowly melted on his metal fingers. He loved the silence—in it, no one looked at him with pity.

The creaking of the door disturbed the peace. Uzi climbed onto the roof and immediately noticed someone else's scratch on his hand.

— Did Vi do this?

— I accidentally hit it in battle.

Uzi clicked her tongue in irritation and sat down too close.

• She's been pestering you too much lately.

En only smiled weakly. He had already become accustomed to her jealousy—harsh, almost aggressive, but strangely warm.

Uzi always acted like the whole world was trying to take him away from her.
