However, this belief was later revealed to be a fabricated legend created by the Tensen themselves as part of their research on the Hōko. In the world of Lord of Mysteries, humans are not alone. Behind the bustling cities, majestic churches, and smoke-filled factories lies a hidden truth known only to a few. A world brimming with secrets, terrifying creatures, forbidden rituals, and transgressors seeking power that could make them gods… or mindless monsters. The world is based on mysterious "paths," each representing a different route to power. Transcendents drink special potions known as sequence potions, starting with sequence 9 and ascending to sequence 0, where they reach a superhuman level. But every power comes at a price; the closer one gets to the truth, the closer one gets to madness and losing control. In the shadows, churches and secret societies move silently, watching for transgressors and fighting uncontrollable beings. Some worship gods, others seek to awaken ancient entities dormant since ages past. And some secrets are so dangerous that merely knowing them could shatter the mind. The world is full of sealed artifacts, objects that possess immense power and terrifying side effects. Some can manipulate destiny, others steal souls or distort reality itself. Therefore, these objects are kept within churches or by mysterious organizations.
