Merlin: is the main character of the game, a magician who wakes up in the world of Esperia without memories of his past. He has a wide range of magical abilities, including the restoration of vitality and the awakening of dormant energy.

Cyran: - a character of the "Magician" class, belonging to the Light-bearing faction. His abilities include playing Merlin's magic, summoning the "Black Hole" and others. Cyran is a calculating and ambitious magician, ready to do anything to achieve his.

Their connection in AFK Journey is a story about rivalry, personality transformation and memories of a shared past that continues to influence their destinies.

History of relationships

1. Their connection began while studying at Serene Lyceum, an academy where both showed outstanding abilities. Merlin was considered the most talented student of the academy, which gave rise to deep rivalry in Cyran. Cyran saw Merlin as a benchmark that needs to be surpassed and a source of personal disappointment.

2. Merlin initially perceived Cyran as a clumsy and inexplicably hostile peer, but at the same time recognized his intelligence and even praised him for specialized magic based on gravity. Over time, their interaction changed: they moved from open distrust to a "strange but pleasant friendship" marked by academic disputes and social frictions. For example, Merlin once jokingly suggested using their talents to create spells that allow you to skip classes - this sentence was difficult to Cyran to understand.

3. Over time, the characters parted ways. Cyran's ambitions led him to the study of forbidden knowledge, which changed his character and development trajectory. After the Second Divine War, Cyran took the position of chief court magician. There are different versions of how he got this position: some believe that he surpassed Merlin, others suggest that Merlin voluntarily refused the opportunity to serve at the palace for other purposes.

Tale 3: A mage once spoke of Cyran's youthful love for sweets, a penchant that seemed to define his early years. But as time passes, his tastes have subtly changed, leaving others what lies behind this quiet transformation.

Tale 4: The snake, Cyran's favorite animal, is often seen as a symbol of mystery and power. His robe bears a pattern said to mimic a serpent, its form half-hidden in the shadows, a quiet reminder of the secrets he keeps.

Tale 5: Even as a respectable court mage, Cyran harbors a secret: he still studies Merlin's magic, years after his graduation. Some whisper that this obsession with forbidden knowledge may one day cost him more than he realizes.

Tale 6: Cyran seems to defy the passage of time, his appearance far younger than his true years. It is said he tends to his body with the care of one who understands the delicate balance between age and vitality.

Tale 7: It was through an informant that Cyran first learned of Merlin's memory loss, which quietly unfolded soon after his awakening. The circumstances surrounding this loss remain shrouded in secrecy, raising more questions than answers.

Tale 8: In the wake of the Second Divine War, where many court mages perished, Cyran's vast experience propelled him to the position of chief court mage. His rise was a testament to his resilience and mastery in the arcane arts.

"Chains of Eternity"

Over a year before Merlin arrived at the Duchy of Whiteridge, Cyran had already been appointed as a court mage in the duke's court. Seeing the Duke stricken with grief over his daughter's passing, his prayers to Dura unanswered, he would offer the Duke a means to resurrect his daughter. This would be the start of Whiteridge's corruption, as his schemes to 'resurrect' Princess Yolena were in truth a means to place the consciousness of the Hypogean Crynoaia into her body; who would impersonate Yolena from that moment.

After ensuring that the Duke had fallen for his schemes, Cyran would continue to move in the shadows, culminating in the corruption of the Hierophant at the Sacred Summit, along with the clergy of many local churches. Maddened, these once-pious worshippers of Dura would begin to engage in dark rituals, sacrificing themselves to it and transforming into Hypofiends. All of this was a means to empower Cryonaia, who was still residing within Yolena's body.

When the Snowspire festival began for the first time, Cyran would briefly meet Merlin at the ball, remarking that he sensed something special about the amnesiac magister. Afterwards, they would not meet again until after Merlin had deduced that Cryonaia was the cause of the endlessly repeating festival.

Whilst investigating the twisted castle, Merlin witnessed a flashback that revealed Cyran's involvement in all the strange events at Whiteridge, as he would promise the Duke the return of his daughter after Ludovic rejected the man's plea to raise Yolena as a Graveborn. During the confrontation with Cryonaia, Cyran would briefly appears, speaking to the Hypogean before escaping through a portal, departing to an unknown location.

History

Cyran was born to a noble family of likely high status, studied at the Serene Lyceum, and was a classmate to the current Merlin. However, despite his efforts, the 'best mage' position consistently eluded him due to Merlin's presence. In all likelihood, this caused a slow but dramatic shift in Cyran's personality over time, driving him to an obsession with seeking power in forbidden knowledge.

After the second Divine War, where his brother perished in battle, Cyran seized the position of chief court mage after a majority of court mages of the time died in battle. The exact circumstances behind his appointment are in dispute; as to whether he outperformed Merlin to secure the position or if Merlin willingly relinquished it to pursue other goals with their talent.

Currently, Cyran's whereabouts are not known after he escaped through a portal before Merlin's confrontation with Cryonaia. - but he says - "living in a palace, you should never let your guard down."

Personality

He is intelligent and calculating, likely a far cry from his former self.

Though he bears a polite and personable demeanor, likely attributable to his noble upbringing and the position he currently holds, this elegant façade is but a front for his truer self, a schemer likely motivated by megalomania, jealousy, and resentment - to the point that he is willing to sacrifice the lives of others for personal gain.

Due to studying forbidden arts, Cyran also remains a secretive individual who carefully avoids inconvenient questions. He is without a doubt ambitious, to the point of believing that furthering ambition is the point of magic. Furthermore, despite being a current high-ranking member of the Adamant Syndicate, his goals seem to extend to being the undisputed ruler of an entire kingdom.

Cyran exhibits an exceptional talent for manipulation and deceit, as exhibited when he utilized the grief the Duke of Whiteridge felt over his daughter's death to exacerbate his scheme of releasing Cryonaia. Many of these traits are potentially the result of constantly being compared to the Magister Merlin in his youth, especially when he was a student at the Serene Lyceum
