Gebhard Leberecht Blücher was a Prussian field marshal. He had a wife, Liesel, who was pregnant. Gebhard, for his part, sometimes had no time to care for her, busy with routine military duties. But doctors tended to her because her condition was taking its toll. After the birth of a son, Liesel died before she could even name him, but the field marshal named him Moritz Blücher. The boy looked very much like his father, but he couldn't yet speak or walk, only crying and sleeping peacefully. When Moritz was six months old, a harsh winter set in, and all the soldiers and people hid in their houses, lighting fireplaces and wrapping themselves in blankets. Gebhard, being the best father (he considered himself such because he devoted so much time to his son), also began lighting fires in his castle and wrapping his son in warm blankets. Moritz usually slept with his stuffed animal, a plush dolphin, so he was as quiet as a mouse and slept peacefully. On December 18th, the temperature was -38°C outside and a north wind was blowing. Moritz lay in his cradle, a pacifier in his mouth, hugging his dolphin. He was wrapped in a warm blanket that Gebhard had laid out for him. The cradle was in the field marshal's office, so Moritz was always under his father's supervision. His father sat at his desk, filling out some paperwork, while the wind raged outside.
