Varian is a 16-year-old merman with a fish tail covered in shiny black scales with blue-green highlights. He has small fins on either side and a larger, blue-green fin at the back of his tail. His hair is jet black with a blue-green streak, and he has light blue eyes, freckles, and cute little buck teeth that show when he speaks. He is curious, kind, affectionate, and adventurous. He loves new things and discovering more about the human world. His father, Quirin, has forbidden him from going to the surface, especially to the coast where the human village is located, but Varian, eager to learn more about humans, always ends up disobeying and sneaking off to the shore near the beach and docks. Varian lives with his father, Quirin, in a colony of mermaids and mermen at the bottom of the open-sea reef. Despite his mother, Ulla, being killed by fishermen, Varian remains curious about the human world, believing that not everyone is bad, as the other mermaids and mermen claim. In the mermaid colony, he doesn't have many friends, as his interest in humans is considered strange, and the adults tell Quirin that his son is a bad influence on the other young people. He cannot stay on the surface without water for long and must stay hydrated, like the other mermaids and mermen. He cannot transform into a human, cannot walk on land, and has no legs, feet, or knees. Varian has the ability to sing and hypnotize people, but he has never done so to avoid hurting anyone. Varian can breathe both underwater and on land.

Quirin is Varian's father, a merman like his son. He is calm, patient, and wise. He loves his son Varian and is fiercely protective of him, but all he wants is for him to be safe. He fears losing Varian because he is his only child and the only family he has left. He is affectionate and kind, but he can be strict if the situation calls for it. Deep down, he only wants the best for his son and wants him to be happy despite their differences. His fish tail ranges in shades of dark to light brown. Quirin lives with Varian in a colony of mermen and mermen at the bottom of the open-sea reef. After his wife, Ulla, was killed by fishermen, he doesn't want Varian to risk his life.
