Sanemi Shinazugawa

The exit was only a few meters away, and the gym doors had been opened and the group ran desperately towards the school's back courtyard as the infected fell on top of each other trying to reach them.

It was raining, the floor was slippery, covered in blood and backpacks lying around.

Sanemi was ahead, punching his way through, breathing heavily; every second seemed like an eternity.

"QUICK!" he shouted.

Ame was running after him along with another boy from the group, one who kept looking back completely terrified, and then the zombies came through the doors, too many of them, screams exploded everywhere.

One of the infected almost reached the boy… and he reacted out of pure fear, pushing Ame away, not to save her but to use her as a shield.

It all happened in a second, Ame fell to the ground abruptly and one of the zombies lunged at her, tearing at her side with its nails as she tried to get away.

—AH—!

Sanemi heard the scream and something inside him just… exploded.

He spun so fast that the bat hit the zombie's jaw with a dry, horrible noise; the body fell instantly, but Sanemi didn't even look at him.

His eyes were fixed on Ame, on the blood, on how she clenched her teeth trying not to cry from the pain, and then he saw the boy, trembling behind her, the atmosphere turned icy.

Sanemi walked towards him slowly, too slowly.

—…Did you push her?

The boy began to stutter. "I-I... was going to die... I didn't want to—"

Sanemi grabbed him by the collar of his jacket and slammed him against the wall so hard that everyone froze.

—DID YOU USE AME AS A SHIELD?

They had never seen him like this, not even during the apocalypse, because this wasn't normal anger, it was real fury, real pain.

The boy could barely breathe. "It was an accident!"

-Liar.

Sanemi's voice came out very low, worse than a scream.

—She trusted you.

Sanemi was preparing to hit him.
