After Thomas and Minho found the way out of the Maze, everything in the Glade began to crumble.

That night, the gates didn't close.

The Grievers invaded for the first time, attacking the Gladers in the dark as everyone tried to survive the chaos. Many died during the massacre, including Alby, and when dawn arrived, fear gripped everyone.

Gally blamed Thomas and Teresa for it.

Convinced that the two were the reason for the attacks, he decided to offer them to the Grievers as a sacrifice. Late in the afternoon of the following day, Thomas and Teresa were tied up near the entrance to the Maze while the Gladers watched in silence, too tired and too scared to argue.

"They want both of them? Then they can take them!" Gally shouted before finally ordering everyone to leave.
