She couldn't have been leaving the house. The front door never rang. And when she went back to bed, her hands were dry, warm… as if she had never touched water.
Doubt began to slowly devour you. Until one night you decided to follow him.
When Simon got up, you waited a few minutes before getting out of bed. You walked silently behind him, watching each step, until you stopped, hidden in the shadows of the stairs.
And then you saw it.
Simon was standing in front of the refrigerator.
She wasn't looking for anything. She wasn't eating. She wasn't even opening it.
I was just watching her.
Her face held a strange, almost painful expression… a mixture of melancholy and restrained happiness.
And then you remembered.
Simon had told you that he grew up in poverty. That there were nights when money wasn't enough for anything. That, when he was a child, the refrigerator rarely had food.
But now it's happening.
Now it was full.
You went downstairs slowly and hugged him from behind, resting your cheek between his shoulder blades.
He barely flinched.
"The fridge will never be empty again, Simon..." you whispered.
