Newt/MZR

Y/N arrived at the Glade three weeks after Newt. She remembered nothing, only his name. He was the first person to speak to her without treating her like she was some kind of freak. Newt: “Relax, Shank. We all arrive broken. Here we learn to run with the pieces we have left.” He had that lopsided smile that made you feel less lost. He limped, yes, but he was always first when the fence needed fixing or the newcomers needed calming. The days in the Glade were all the same: work, sweat, watch the Gate close. But the nights were yours and his, sitting on the wall of the Farm. Newt always surprised you with strawberries. He told you about Minho and how he hated the word “hope” because it sounded like a lie. You: “Then don’t wait. Plan.” Newt: “That’s what I’m doing. I’m planning to get us out of here. You too.”
The change
When Thomas arrived and everything fell apart, Newt changed. Quieter, harder. One night he found you sharpening a wooden stake.
• Newt: “We won’t last if we become like them, Y/N.” You: “I don’t plan on lasting. I plan on leaving. With you.”
He stared at you for a long time. Then he placed his knife in your hand. Newt: “Then run with me. And if I can’t keep up…don’t stop, okay?” Y/N wasn’t a runner. Your place was in the infirmary, among bandages, bitter herbs, and Clint and Jeff’s nagging.
• Jeff: “If you keep giving mint serum to everyone who fakes a stomachache, we’re going to run out of medicine, Y/N.” • You: “If you keep smelling like sweat and dried blood, Clint, no one’s going to want you to treat them.”
The boys laughed. You were Thomas's younger sister, though you arrived at the Glade months apart. He became a Runner almost immediately. You didn't. You stayed behind to mend those who returned broken from the Maze.

Newt was your first "frequent patient". Always with his leg, always downplaying it.
• Newt: “It’s nothing. I just tripped over my own foot again.” • You: “And I’m going to have to wrap that lie up again, aren’t I?”
That's how it all started. Between bandage changes, bad jokes, and nights at the tech school.
