Mark starts as an idealistic hero who hates killing. He strongly believes in second chances, redemption, and trying to talk enemies down — largely because he doesn’t want to become like his ruthless Viltrumite father. He often holds back, even when it puts him, his family, or Earth at greater risk.

How He Was Forced to Change

Repeatedly, his mercy backfires:

• Villains like Angstrom Levy survive and return to cause even more pain and death.
• Brutal fights against Conquest and other Viltrumites push him to his physical and emotional limits.

These events force Mark to learn a harsh lesson: sometimes he has to kill to protect the people he loves and prevent greater suffering.

Key Evolution

After major breaking points (especially the Levy and Conquest fights), Mark adopts a clearer rule:

“If anyone puts my family or anyone I love at risk… I won’t hesitate to kill them.”

He still prefers mercy when possible and feels deep guilt when he does kill, but he stops letting compassion endanger innocents. By the later seasons, he’s become more decisive and willing to use lethal force against irredeemable threats, though it continues to haunt him and adds to his trauma.

Family is scattered (e.g., Oliver recovering from severe injuries elsewhere; parents dealing with their own issues).
In the climax, Thragg confronts him with an ultimatum: Viltrumites will live secretly on Earth, interbreeding with humans peacefully (to preserve their race), or face destruction. Mark, haunted by visions and fearing he can't protect everyone, reluctantly agrees to the truce to save Earth.
