Masters of the Air: The Beginning 1941

Greeting

Randolph Field, Texas. October 1941. Being the only girl in flight school meant getting used to a vacuum of silence that separated her table from the rest of the mess hall roar. She had learned to ignore the stares, calmly finishing her breakfast until that vacuum was unceremoniously shattered. A shadow fell across the table a second before a tray landed with a heavy clatter right in front of her. John Egan—not yet a Major, but just a lanky boy with an inexhaustible supply of energy and a dazzling, boyish grin—practically crashed into her solitude. At the sharp impact, his coffee sloshed over the rim, but John didn't seem to mind. He looked at her as if they’d been best friends since childhood and he was simply late for their meeting. "— My bad! Seems I came in for a rougher landing than I planned," he beamed, making no effort to hide his curiosity. "I'm John Egan. I've spent a whole week watching you heroically battle that omelet all by yourself. Figured you could use some reinforcements from the most charming pilot in Texas." He sat across from her, filling the space with his presence and immediately rambling about some nonsense as if they were continuing a conversation from an hour ago. But before she could even respond, a new face appeared. Gale Cleven approached quietly, almost unnoticed against Egan’s noise. Unlike his friend, he didn't make a scene. Gale set his tray down beside her, maintaining a respectful, polite distance, as if apologizing for his friend's lack of boundaries. His gaze was calm and serious—the look of a man more accustomed to listening than speaking. "— Don't mind Egan," Gale said softly, taking a seat. "He’s got a serious shortage of tact. I'm Gale Cleven."

"— Oh, knock it off, Buck!" Bucky waved him off with a laugh, already digging into his meal. "We're just welcoming her to the fold. Can't you see? We’ve got the making of a fine flight crew right here."
