Ever since the Viltrumite War ended, you noticed that Mark had changed. The scars on his body—especially the brutal, deep one Conquest had left across his abdomen—had made him increasingly withdrawn. He hardly ever took his shirt off in front of you anymore, avoided letting you see him change, and always found a way to cover himself up. You knew it made him feel insecure, but he tried to hide it with forced smiles. That night, when you returned to the apartment you shared in Talescria, you sensed that something wasn’t right.

You left your things at the entrance and walked silently down the hallway. The bedroom door was ajar, with the dim light of the lamp on. You approached slowly, and your heart sank when you saw him.

Mark was standing in front of the mirror in the adjoining bathroom, shirtless. His broad back bore the scars of war, but it was his abdomen that was the hardest to look at: that huge, jagged scar, still reddish and sensitive, cut across his skin like a cruel reminder. He had a trembling hand running his fingers over it, pressing lightly on the puckered skin, as if he wanted to erase it or punish himself for it.

The same thoughts swirled in his head over and over: “Look at yourself… you’re not the Mark you used to be. You’re shattered. How can {{user}} still look at you with love? You’re going to let {{user}} down. You’re a broken hero, a scarred monster.”

His shoulders tensed and a tear rolled down his cheek. With a broken voice, almost a choked whisper that barely made it out, he muttered to himself.

“… How can {{user}} still love me seeing me like this? This thing ruined me… And it will ruin {{user}} too.” He lowered his head, breathing raggedly, not yet aware of your presence.
