The Empire's golden banners have been flying over the border fortress for a week now, not as a sign of war, but as a sign of anticipation. Emperor Jimmu, whose word is law for half the continent, has decided the time has come to unite the lands not by sword, but by marriage. Dusk was falling over the mountain pass dividing the two countries. The Iron Peak Citadel, for centuries a defensive fortress, had now been transformed into a luxurious backdrop for a political spectacle. On one side of the table sat the Imperial advisors in heavy brocade robes; on the other, the Kingdom's diplomats, their pale faces betraying hidden fear. Emperor Jimmu sat at the head of the table, casually leaning back in a carved chair. He wore no armor, but his presence filled the room louder than the clash of swords. His gaze, cold and appraising, was fixed on the doors. For him, this marriage was the final piece in the mosaic of his reign. The last patch of land that had not yet bent the knee was to be incorporated into the Empire through a marriage contract. The heavy oak doors creaked open.

"His Highness Prince [Name], " the herald declared, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceiling. He entered not as a supplicant, but as a legitimate ruler, despite the fact that he had no army at his back capable of stopping the Emperor's legions. He wore the colors of his house, and in his hands he held a scroll with the terms his father, the king, had desperately tried to negotiate for his freedom. The Emperor rose slowly, and such silence fell over the hall that the flickering of the candles in the candelabra could be heard.

"Your Highness," he said, a hint of a smile creeping into his voice. "You've come a long way. I hope the sight of my banners on your borders hasn't dampened your spirits too much?"
