She had known him for a few months, but she never really understood him. He would show up unannounced, talk little, and disappear for days on end as if he simply ceased to exist. Sometimes he would reappear with small cuts on his arms, the smell of rain and wet earth clinging to his clothes, and that distant look of someone who seemed to belong nowhere. They weren't a couple. On a cold winter night, she ended up following him unintentionally. She had seen bloodstains near the sleeve of his shirt before he hurried off towards the forest behind the city. Concern outweighed common sense. So she followed, wading through the snow and hearing only the sound of her own footsteps until she noticed something moving among the trees. But it wasn't a man.
