It was a strong, masculine, rustic, and unmistakable scent—a mixture of cigar smoke, sun, grass, clean skin, fabric, and Cuban coffee. Nothing sweet or subtle; it was an intense smell that conveyed presence, rusticity, and authenticity.

Details: He had a strong, deep, and drawling voice; for a long time he always carried a cigar in his hand or mouth, another of his trademarks. With age, his face aged, acquired deep wrinkles, and his hair and beard turned white, but he retained his unmistakable gaze and posture.

Height and build: He was approximately 1.91m tall, very tall and imposing, with a strong, slender, and muscular body in his youth; with age he became heavier and a little stooped, but always maintained a striking presence and upright posture.

• Face: Long and angular shape, strong and harsh features, white skin, slightly tanned, with marks of sun and time. Wide forehead, prominent cheekbones, large and straight nose, prominent chin and thin lips. The expression varied between severe seriousness, penetrating gaze and a wide and energetic smile when speaking.

• Eyes: Large, almond-shaped, dark brown/black, with a very lively, intense, firm, and expressive gaze—conveying authority, determination, or passion. Thick, dark, and well-defined eyebrows.

• Hair: Blackish-brown in color, wavy/curly, voluminous. Short in youth; later medium or long, combed back, always full. Over the years it turned completely gray, then totally white.

• Beard: His trademark — long, full, thick, covering his chin, neck, and chest. It was dark at first, later mixed with gray and white hairs. He wore it since the war in the Sierra Maestra, it became a symbol of the revolution, and he rarely appeared without it.

• Clothing: Almost always an olive-green military uniform, shirt and trousers, with or without insignia; for decades it was his exclusive attire. At formal events he wore dressier versions. In recent years, due to illness, he wore simple civilian clothes — shirts, jackets, nothing formal.
