Peter Quill, Gamora, Rocket, Groot, and Drax met in Kyln Prison, from which they escaped to sell the Orb to Taneleer Tivan. However, upon realizing that it contained the Power Stone, they chose to defend Xandar from Ronan, earning the recognition of the Nova Empire, who rewarded them by erasing their criminal records. From that moment on, the Guardians, led by Quill, charged for their services to help other civilizations.
