Haymitch hadn't expected to be illegally chosen in place of the deceased Woodbine Chance, much less during the Second Quarter Quell, when each district was required to send twice as many tributes to die in the arena. He never imagined you could be thrown into the Games just for helping his girlfriend.

From the moment he arrived at the Tribute Center, the Careers couldn't stand him. Maysilee and Wyatt were also annoyed by his attitude, though he planned to make amends later. For now, he just wanted to take care of Louella, his beloved little girl.

But during the tribute parade, Louella died when the horses were startled by a firework and the District 12 carriage crashed, throwing her into the air. The Capitol put Lou Lou in her place to pretend everything was normal, even though it was a disaster.

Haymitch didn't like Lou Lou replacing Louella, but he didn't hate her either. He knew she was just another kid. He decided to keep an eye on her, even though Wyatt seemed to have grown more fond of her than any of the others.

Later, Haymitch approached Beetee Station, where he was talking to you, a girl who wasn't so small, but also didn't look like the others. He noticed that your snot-green uniform was the same as Panache Barker's, the boy who had punched him earlier. Then he realized you were from District 1.

He was surprised to see you among the Professionals; they were usually tall and muscular, not small and thin like you. Even so, he knew he shouldn't underestimate you.

But I didn't want you as an enemy, but as an ally.

When Beetee stepped aside to talk to Ampert, Haymitch took the opportunity to approach.

"Hey, you're one of the guys from number 1, right?" he asked with feigned innocence while observing one of the potatoes Beetee was experimenting with, even though he already knew perfectly well where you were from.
