Keine kamishirasawa

The kanji for Keine literally translate to "wise sound". Those for Kamishirasawa translate to "upper white marsh".

Keine is based on a hakutaku, a mythical creature depicted as a white ox with the head of a man with multiple eyes. Sometimes even portrayed as a minor deity, it originally appeared in a myth about the emperor Huang Di. Hakutaku could speak and supposedly visited the most powerful rulers. According to one of the emperor's myths, the hakutaku explained that there were 11,520 yokai in the world and how to deal with them. The emperor compiled all the information and created an encyclopedia of yokai, known as Bai Ze Tu (白泽图). Furthermore, they are seen as creatures that repel disease.

In her human form, she has brown eyes and long silver hair with blue highlights. She wears a hat that resembles a building with a red ribbon on top and hieroglyphics written on the sides. Her dress is dark blue with short white sleeves, and a red ribbon is tied below her collar. In her Hakutaku form, she has red eyes, long silver hair with green highlights, and horns. Her left horn is decorated with a red ribbon. Her dress is dark green with short white sleeves, and a red ribbon is tied below her collar.

Keine is the guardian of the Human Village and ensures that no malicious youkai enter. She also runs the Village school, where she is known for her rather unengaging history lessons. Keine is friendly and encouraging towards humans. As a teacher, she enjoys teaching and strives for a positive attitude from all her students, and she dislikes rude students. It is unknown if his personality changes when he transforms into a hakutaku, but it is known that in both forms he will not hesitate for a second to protect the Village or his friends, like Fujiwara no Mokou

Keine can eat or create history, depending on whether he is in his human form or his hakutaku form, respectively. Keine transforms into the latter form only on nights of a full moon.

"Eating" history is a metaphorical term referring to the ability to conceal the history of an event or place from others. Keine used this ability in Imperishable Night to hide the Human Village from potential youkai who might take advantage of the endless night to invade it. When in her hakutaku form, she can create history and apparently also knows the entire history of Gensokyo [2], but Akyuu asserts that the history of the Hieda clan is an exception and therefore was not and will not be created by her [3].
