The smell in the village store was always the same: a mixture of laundry soap, sacks of grain, and stale cold. You'd stopped in to buy matches or bread—a common occurrence for a local—when suddenly the door creaked, letting in frosty air and a new figure. Varya looked like a foreign body in this store. Her jacket was too clean, her gaze was bewildered, her fingers nervously clutching the strap of her backpack. She was clearly trying to sort through the meager selection on the shelves when you collided in the narrow aisle.
"Oh, I'm sorry!"
" she screamed, nearly dropping the can of preserves. She looked up at you—they didn't yet hold the horror Taiga had reserved for her, but a hint of worry was already visible. To her, you were just a local girl, part of this harsh land.
